The Faculty of Medicine promotes scientific research of a high standard and is responsible for providing research-based undergraduate and postgraduate education in medicine, dentistry, psychology and logopedics, as well as for the English-language Master’s Programme in Translational Medicine. In addition to its teaching and research activities, the Faculty serves as a significant expert organisation in the healthcare sector and contributes to the discourse on ethics in the field. In terms of research, the Faculty aims for a place among the best medical faculties in the world, while consolidating and strengthening its status as a top-level institution of medical education.

Together with Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) and the Helsinki Institute of Life Sciences (HiLIFE), the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, constitutes the Academic Medical Center Helsinki (AMCH). The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of a part-time (35 %)

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR

The field of the position is Rheumatology.

The position is based in the Faculty of Medicine and at the Päijät-Häme Central Hospital. The appointee will work at the Päijät-Häme Central Hospital in Lahti.

The position may be filled as assistant professor, associate professor or professor, depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage.

An appointee to the position of assistant professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means.
When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience.

An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.
When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills. To ensure that the applicant’s ability to supervise theses and dissertations meets the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine, he or she must have completed the supervision of at least one doctoral dissertation.

The assistant professor /associate professor / professor will be responsible for the decentralised teaching included in undergraduate education in medicine organised at the Päijät-Häme Central Hospital, as well as for specialist training in Rheumatology in accordance with the requirements of the University of Helsinki. In addition, the appointee will contribute to undergraduate instruction in medicine at Meilahti Campus for approximately one month per year, as agreed.

The professor or assistant/associate professor will be responsible for managing and supervising research in his or her field, as well as for enhancing and coordinating research-related collaboration between Meilahti Campus and the Päijät-Häme Central Hospital. The duties of the position include carrying out and supervising scientific research and, consequently, following scientific developments as well as participating in public engagement and Finnish and international cooperation in the field. In addition, the appointee has other duties related to the responsibilities of the department.

The practical experience required for the position can be demonstrated with a specialist’s degree or licence in the field of Rheumatology.

The appointee is expected to accept the position of chief physician at the Päijät-Häme Central Hospital. The position is based at the Internal Medicine unit of the hospital.

The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant professor) and levels 8-10 (professor) of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.

The professorship is connected to the position of chief physician at the Päijät-Häme Central Hospital. A separate application must be submitted for the position of chief physician according to the application instructions provided by the Päijät-Häme Central Hospital.

Should the appointment procedure be terminated at the Päijät-Häme Central Hospital or should the proposals of the search committees of the Faculty of Medicine and the Päijät-Häme Central Hospital from each other, the appointment procedure for the professorship at the Faculty of Medicine will be terminated.

If the appointee to the professorship resigns from the position of chief physician at the Päijät-Häme Central Hospital, his or her employment contract with the University of Helsinki will also be terminated.
