The Faculty of Medicine promotes scientific research of a high standard and is responsible for providing research-based undergraduate and postgraduate education in medicine, dentistry, psychology and logopedics, as well as for the English-language Master’s Programme in Translational Medicine. In addition to its teaching and research activities, the Faculty serves as a significant expert organisation in the healthcare sector and contributes to the discourse on ethics in the field. In terms of research, the Faculty aims for a place among the best medical faculties in the world, while consolidating and strengthening its status as a top-level institution of medical education.

The South Karelia Social and Health Care District (Eksote) offers the opportunity to work at the South Karelia Central Hospital in Lappeenranta, which provides comprehensive emergency services and a wide range of specialist services, in addition to having an independent research fund and a community of researchers. In addition, our region has 11 health and wellbeing centres to which the benefits associated with the position also apply. The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR

The position is open in a field of clinical medicine represented at the South Karelia Central Hospital (http://www.eksote.fi/sites/eng/Sivut/default.aspx).

The position is based at the Faculty of Medicine and at the South Karelia Central Hospital. The appointee will work at the South Karelia Central Hospital(Lappeenranta).

The position may be filled as assistant professor, associate professor or professor, depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage.
An appointee to the position of assistant professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means.
When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience.

An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.
When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and
pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills. To ensure that the applicant’s ability to supervise theses and dissertations meets the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine, he or she must have completed the supervision of at least one doctoral dissertation.

The assistant professor /associate professor / professor will be responsible for the decentralised teaching included in undergraduate education in medicine organised at the the South Karelia Social and Health Care District., as well as for specialist training in his or her field accordance with the requirements of the University of Helsinki. In addition, the appointee will contribute to undergraduate instruction in medicine at Meilahti Campus for approximately one month per year, as agreed.

The assistant professor / associate professor / professor will be responsible for managing and supervising research in his or her field, as well as for enhancing and coordinating research-related collaboration between Meilahti Campus and the South Karelia Social and Health Care District.
The duties of the position include carrying out and supervising scientific research and, consequently, following scientific developments as well as participating in public engagement and Finnish and international cooperation in the field. In addition, the appointee has other duties related to the responsibilities of the department.

The practical experience required for the position can be demonstrated with a specialist’s degree or license in the field as well as having clinical experience in the field.

The appointee is expected to accept the secondary position of head of department and to negotiate the duties of the secondary position at the South Karelia Central Hospital. The position is based at the South Karelia Central Hospital.

The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant professor) and levels 8-10 (professor) of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
