The Faculty of Social Sciences in Tampere University is currently looking for a motivated and talented applicant for a Doctoral Researcher Position in the project TransParent: Parental Brain, Hormones, and Behavior Across the Transition to Parenthood. The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of 3 years from the beginning of 2020.

Job description

The TransParent project is funded by the Academy of Finland and the research is conducted in the Human Information Processing Laboratory operating under the Psychology programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences. The goal of the TransParent project is to measure behavioral, physiological, and hormonal responses to infant, child, and adult emotion signals during pregnancy and the child’s first year to find out whether central aspects of parent-child interaction change during the transition to parenthood and associate with postnatal caregiving quality. Together with the research group, the doctoral researcher will conduct research with pregnant women and their partners across pregnancy and the child’s first year. The research includes psychophysiological (EEG, EMG, ECG), eyetracking, and observational methods. In addition, biological samples will be collected for hormonal and genetic analyses that are conducted elsewhere. The hired candidate is expected to work towards completion of a PhD degree under the supervision of Academy Research Fellow Mikko Peltola.

Requirements

You have a Master’s degree or an equivalent higher university degree in Psychology or a related field that is relevant for the research topic. You have the motivation and competence to carry out goal-oriented research and to pursue post-graduate studies and complete a doctoral degree. You are proficient in English, both written and spoken.

Experience in psychophysiology, eyetracking, observational assessments, and programming (Python, R) are appreciated, but not required for applying the position.

If selected to the position, you are expected to apply for post-graduate studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences Doctoral Program at Tampere University (unless already a PhD student at the university). More information on the admission process and requirements is available here. In case you are not already enrolled in the doctoral program at the time when the contract starts, your position will first be a Researcher position, which will be changed to a Doctoral Researcher position once you have been accepted to the doctoral program.

Candidates are selected based on the level of promise that they show, and this will be evaluated on the basis of their motivation letter, their previous success in their studies and merits in writing their thesis and / or scientific publishing.
