The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) is dedicated to pursuing world-class research and delivering high-quality education in the fields of biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine and health technology. The MET faculty have 70 professors and staff of over 600 and we conduct internationally acclaimed basic and applied research. 

Medical Physics is one of the important educational and research areas at the MET faculty. Our Finnish and International biomedical engineering MSc programs include also several medical physics courses. Education and research at the MET faculty connects and combines expertise from biology to biomedical engineering and physics, biotechnology, and clinical medicine with an aim to increase understanding of the biological processes in health and disease and to develop novel medical and engineering solutions for biomedical research and clinical needs.  

Job description  

We are seeking highly motivated and accomplished applicants in the area of medical physics. As the professor is expected to take responsibility on development of the medical physics education and research, the position will be filled at the level of Associate Professor or Full Professor, based on the experience and expertise of the selected candidate. We are interested in candidates who can complement our present expertise and activities in this research area.

Your expertise should be based on solid research that is related to the area of medical physics via emerging technologies and methods. The position can be tailored according to your specific expertise. Your research interests can focus on several different aspects of medical physics, such as:

  • Biomedical imaging physics, devices and methods
  • Medical image processing e.g. by AI based solutions
  • Radiation and other treatment physics, devices and methods
  • Development or modelling and simulation of medical physics systems and tools

You are expected to pursue and supervise scientific research in the field, as well as lead, conduct and develop education in medical physics. Active collaboration with local, national and European research partners, clinical stakeholders and companies is encouraged. Furthermore, interacting with the society and acquiring external funding are other central responsibilities of the position.

Requirements 

You should have a doctoral degree in area of the professorship such as physics or related engineering field. You should also have teaching and scientific or technological research experience in academia or in practice e.g. in companies or in hospitals.

Associate Professor

We require:

  • track record of independent and international scholarly activity in the field of the professorship
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position
  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding

Professor

We require:

  • high-level scholarly expertise in the field of the professorship
  • experience of leading scientific research and projects
  • skills and ability to plan and provide high-quality research-based education and instruction
  • track record of winning external research funding
  • track record of international scholarly activity and collaboration

Initial appointments for associate professors are for five years with renewal and eventual permanent tenure subject to successful performance evaluation.  You will have support throughout the five-year period to facilitate the establishment of an internationally competitive research programme.  A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

Candidates may be invited for a video interview during the first stage of the recruitment process. The most qualified candidates will be invited to Tampere University for an interview and may undergo an aptitude assessment. They will also undergo a review by external experts and may be required to give a demonstration of their teaching skills.
