DOCTORAL CANDIDATE FOR RADIO FREQUENCY MODELING IN FUTURE WIRELESS SYSTEMS

Job description
The commercial deployment of fifth-generation (5G) cellular wireless has started this year. 5G cellular radios will soon be widespread and found in every corner of our life. Feasibility tests of using 5G radios in challenging scenarios, e.g., public transportation or city infrastructure, are among the most important development aspects in industry to ensure successful deployment of 5G. Furthermore, cellular wireless industry has already started pursuing candidate technologies for beyond-5G cellular wireless. One of such technologies is the effective use of even higher radio frequencies than presently used in 5G, e.g., the D-band above 100 GHz. The development of an experimental testbed is an essential starting point for feasibility tests of 5G radios and for the exploration of the beyond-5G frequency spectrum. A testbed will allow field measurements and improve understanding and modeling of radio frequency aspects of those cellular systems that we need to optimize.

You as a doctoral candidate will tackle these important research aspects by
1) Using and improving an over-the-air link connectivity testbed emulating 5G and possibly future-generation radios; an existing testbed is shown in the figure.
2) Performing field tests of the link connectivity under possible operating conditions of 5G and beyond radio devices, e.g., public transportation, outdoor and outdoor-to-indoor cellular scenarios, and finally
3) Analyzing impacts of operating environments on the link connectivity, and devising a way to exploit antenna arrays for improved connectivity.

The work will be embedded in several research projects, including one within the European HORIZON 2020 framework, and two projects funded by Business Finland and the Academy of Finland, respectively. The work also involves interaction with Finnish industry and other academic partners committed to the development of wirelessly connected public transportation and city infrastructure.

Research group
Associate Professor Katsuyuki Haneda leads the Antennas and Propagation group, which has been involved in a number of EU FP7 and Horizon 2020 projects on 5G physical layer studies and hence is he well respected in the international scientific and industrial research communities. Applications of the developed knowledge and experimental facilities in 5G cellular to beyond-5G systems as well as other industries and society are key research missions of the group.

Requirements for the position
• A MSc degree in electrical engineering or equivalent
• Solid knowledge of microwave engineering, including radio transceivers, wave propagation and antennas
• Experience in radio frequency instrumentation and measurements, e.g., antennas and field tests
It is advantageous if the applicant has the following knowledge and skills:
• Physical layer 5G radio communications, especially millimeter-wave and multiple-input multiple-output radios
• Experience in using and programming universal software-defined-radio peripherals
• Basic knowledge of signal processing and experience in exercising them through computer programs, e.g., MATLAB and Labview

Salary and contract terms
The expected starting salary for a doctoral candidate is approximately 2500 €/month and salary will increase with responsibilities and performance over time. The contract includes occupational health benefits and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. Preferable starting time is during the first quarter of year 2020.
