Professor of practice in Processes and products of the bio-based industry

The field of the professorship is processes and products of the bio-based industry -especially wood-based fibers. Including development of the traditional fiber properties and manufacturing processes and creating new ones. The professor position is full-time and filled for a five-year period.

Your role and goals

The successful candidate will be expected to promote business activities in the Southeastern Finland Economic Area through product development projects, which apply for funding from regional, national and EU sources.

Further, the candidate is expected to develop co-operation in the field of research and education between the Southeastern University of Applied Sciences (XAMK) and Aalto University. The aim is to promote opportunities for students at XAMK to continue their studies at Aalto University and to provide collaborative learning pathways for engineers and diploma engineers. The aim of the educational co-operation is to ensure that the Southeast Finland Economic Area has sufficient expertise for the needs of the bio-based industry cluster also in the future.

Scientific Environment

The department of Bioproducts and Biosystems (BIO2), one of the three departments in the School of Chemical Engineering at Aalto University, has an internationally leading reputation in basic and applied research for the development of advanced materials from natural resources. It is one of the leading European research and higher education institutions in the field of sustainable chemistry and engineering based on the utilization of renewable resources. BIO2 aims to contribute to the development of novel solutions to move towards sustainable primary production and processing systems that can produce materials with fewer inputs, less environmental impact and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Your experience and ambitions

Professor of Practice is a professorial position meeting Aalto University requirements and subject to external evaluation. Significant expertise in research and development is required in order to fill a Professor of Practice position. A commitment to develop the field through research and teaching activities is also necessary.

We look for applicants who have a suitable doctoral degree, sufficient industry experience, a collaborative network and the ability to lead also applied research projects. The successful candidate is expected to have good written and oral communication skills in English, Finnish skills are an asset.

Salary and contract terms

The salary is based on Aalto University’s salary system, but applicants can also provide their own requests. The contract includes occupational health benefits and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The position will be located 50 % in the Aalto University campus in Otaniemi, Espoo and 50 % in Savonlinna.
