Job Title, Field and Location

The job title is Professor in Architecture. The field of the Professorship is Architecture, especially Building Construction. The position will be filled permanently.

The position is located in the Oulu School of Architecture (OSA), Faculty of Technology. The OSA is a regionally, nationally and internationally networked Research Unit, which educates architects and Doctors of Technology for demanding private and public positions as well as does creative research in cooperation with other fields and society in general. Education and research focus specifically on the evolving northern built environment. The OSA is responsible for administering a 5-year Degree Programme in Architecture, which consists of Candidate's and Master's Degree phases. Furthermore, the OSA hosts a 2-year international Architectural Design Master's Degree Programme. The faculty also hosts a doctoral program (ARCHI-DP).

Design research conducted at the OSA can be characterized as promoting competency-based growth, which offers excellent opportunities for multi- and cross-disciplinary research as well as national and international cooperation in the focus and profile areas of the University of Oulu. The OSA cooperates with other disciplines such as cultural Anthropology, Geography, Mathematics, Structural Engineering, Health Sciences and ICT. The research focus areas are adaptive architectural and urban lighting, integrative urban development and wooden construction. The primary focus of teaching and research for the Professorship in Architecture is Building Construction with an emphasis on innovative integration of building construction, technology and architecture. Responsibilities of the Professorship also include coordination of the teaching of structural engineering and HVAC technologies.

The aim is to fill the position for a permanent position beginning at 1st of August 2020. A six-month trial period will be applied in the position.

Job Responsibilities, Required Qualifications and Language Proficiency

Under section 33 of the Universities Act, a professor shall carry out and supervise scientific or artistic work, provide education based on it and follow developments in science or art and participate in societal interaction and international cooperation in his/her field.

The selected candidate will be responsible for the research and teaching of architecture, especially building construction as well as their development in cooperation with other teachers, within 1624 annual work hours. In research development the focus will be in acquiring supplementary research funding (Academy of Finland, Tekes, EU) for doctoral studies and postdoctoral research. Furthermore, the responsibilities include developing cooperation between the University of Oulu and other Finnish universities and international partners in a way that supports the research strategy of the OSA.

The required qualifications for the post of professor include a M.Sc. degree in Architecture, an applicable doctoral degree, high quality scientific and artistic competence, experience in leading scientific research, the ability to provide high quality education based on research and to supervise final theses, as well as evidence of international collaboration in his/her field of research. The person to be appointed to the post of the Professor is expected to have good networking abilities, skills to prepare and lead research projects as well as the ability to work together with other universities, research institutions and other private and public parties within the field. Furthermore, the person is expected to have practical familiarity within the domain.

When assessing the applicants, the merits that are taken into consideration include scientific publications and other research results with scientific value, artistic merits, success in acquiring supplementary research funding, experience in leading research groups, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the skill to create teaching material, other teaching merits, the demonstration lecture, and the doctoral theses the applicant has supervised. In addition, the following merits will be taken into consideration: the applicant's activity in the scientific community and university administrative tasks, practical experience and evidence of cooperation with the building industry, scientific work abroad and international activities.

The teaching language at the University of Oulu is Finnish. The position includes teaching in both Finnish and English.

Salary
The salary of the professor will be set on levels 8 – 10 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, supplementary remuneration will be given for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 50 % of whatever salary scale (8 – 10) is set for the post. The successful candidate will receive also full benefits provided by the University of Oulu to all its employees, including free time corresponding to holidays and occupational health care services.

3)      teaching merits of relevance to the post concerned are requested to be presented in the form of a teaching portfolio, or a comparable document. In the portfolio (or other document) the outline presented below should be followed.

4)      a brief research and action plan;

5)      at most 10 publications or other works, which should be numbered in accordance with the list of publications;

6)      a design portfolio with a maximum of 10 of the applicant's design projects. Publication information must be included.

Before being officially accepted for the position, the successful applicant must present his/her original degree diplomas or certified copies thereof, as well as a signed curriculum vitae, to the Faculty.

Expert Assessment
The Research Council of the University of Oulu will select at least two experts to be consulted regarding the selection process. When selecting the experts, the respective specializations of the applicants in the field are taken into consideration, and general fairness is observed otherwise as well. The applicants are informed about the selection of the experts. When the experts deliver their statements, these will be sent to the applicants.

Demonstration Lecture and Interview
The recruitment committee will, if needed, interview the applicants that they consider best and arrange the demonstration lectures when necessary.

Official Employment
The Dean will make her proposition on the basis of the proposition of the recruitment committee and submits this, justifications and attachments included, to the Vice Rector, who will make the decision concerning the employment of the successful applicant.

TEACHING PORTFOLIO, TABLE OF CONTENTS

In agreement with the procedures accepted in the University of Oulu, teaching skills mentioned in the Appointments Statute (770/2009) will be evaluated according to the outline below.

  1. teaching philosophy, teaching strategies and methods
    - teacher’s self-reflection on his/her teaching style, a personal background idea of teaching; how are these reflected in teaching work? A description of oneself as a teacher and an implementer of educational work.
  2. practical experience in teaching and efforts to improve teaching
  3. a description of educational material (curricula, handouts, assignments, workbooks)
  4. professional development as a teacher (courses in university pedagogy)
  5. evaluation from teaching (student evaluations, peer evaluations, awards and assessed test lectures)
  6. future teaching goals and plans
    - teacher’s plans for future directions in his/her teaching development, for example in relation to the teaching curriculum of the OSA
