Doctoral Student Position (Information Technology In Automation)

The group of Information Technology in Automation in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation applies information technologies such as machine learning, digital twins and Industrial Internet to solve topical problems in diverse application areas in industry and critical infrastructure.

The Doctoral Student Position

The position is a fully funded PhD student position and the selected person will be appointed for a fixed term starting as soon as possible. The work will be done under supervision of Professor Valeriy Vyatkin. The candidate is expected to complete the academic enrolment to the doctoral program of Aalto school of Electrical Engineering (ELEC). The position is related to a Business Finland funded project, applying machine learning to develop advanced features to virtual power plants.  The project will end in September of 2021, and the initial contract’s duration will be limited to this date. However, new projects in this area are expected, and the intention is to continue the employment of the student in these projects, aiming at completion of the PhD in 4 years.

Virtual power plants aim to trade smart energy resources profitably on available energy markets. The project is done in close collaboration with industry. The PhD student will benefit from industrial state-of-the-art case studies, and work as part of a developer community.

Responsibilities

In addition to research work, persons hired are expected to participate in supervision of students and teaching, following the standard practices of the department.

What we are looking for

  • M.Sc. or equivalent in a related field.
  • Background in computer science and machine learning.
  • Strong practical software development ability.
  • Ability to apply machine learning systematically to practical problems.
  • Proficiency in English (oral and written) required.
  • Interest in industry collaboration and working with real world cases.
  • Interest in the energy domain is required. Prior experience in automation or energy related topics is an advantage, but not required.
  • We have an extensive network of high quality international collaborators. Interest in travelling and going for researcher exchange is an advantage, and should be mentioned in your application.

What you get

The starting salary for a doctoral student position is 2 518 € with pay raises according to progress in studies and publications. In addition to the salary, the contract includes occupational health care and other benefits, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The annual total workload of teaching staff at Aalto University is 1 624 hours. The position is located at the Aalto University Otaniemi campus right next to the Aalto University metro station, 15 min by metro from downtown Helsinki.
