VTT – beyond the obvious.

CaCO3 based processes, such as cement and lime production, are globally the most important industrial source of CO2 emissions. CO2 originating from the raw material CaCO3 is difficult to avoid but relatively easy to capture and utilize. At 2019 VTT invested on the experimental rotating kiln, which can be heated up to 1000 °C by electricity, produced by e.g. solar and wind. Replacing existing industrial kilns with electricity-heated kilns would replace fossil fuels, and enrich CO2 stream originating from CaCO3 to almost 100% concentration enabling economically feasible utilisation.

In this thesis work, you will be an essential part of the team conducting novel experiments with the kiln and analysing the results. The experiments will be done with CaCO3 based samples from our partners in cement, lime, steel and pulp industries. Final target of the work is to estimate economic feasibility of such kiln in industrial scale.

This position requires an understanding of energy economics and process industries. A solid academic background in areas such as chemistry/chemical engineering is an advantage.
