Position for Postdoctoral Researcher in Machine Learning in Water and Development issues

We seek a highly qualified and enthusiastic researcher with a great interest on multidisciplinary research on water and environmental engineering. The fully funded position is for a period of 1+1 years starting from March-May 2020.

Project description: Majakka project concentrates on co-creation of doctoral education and water engineering. The 5-year project started in 2017 and is funded by Maa- ja vesitekniikan tuki ry. As the project is well on the way, it provides the candidate a great setting to contribute to the project’s final phase as well as for personal development.

Main responsibilities: The fully funded position has a special focus on machine learning and computational methods on water engineering. The postdoctoral researcher will use 30-50% of working time on doctoral candidate instruction in Water and environmental engineering research group. The researcher is responsible for designing new ways to include machine learning methods into water and development research. He/she will actively publish their research findings on high-quality international journals.

Research environment: The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team of enthusiastic researchers. The Water & Development Research Group is among the world leading groups in global water and development issues, and part of the Water and Environmental Engineering Research Group. The key focus of the group is on integrating water with other topical global challenges, such as food security, urbanization and energy security. The group conducts high quality research, lab analysis and publishes their work in the leading journals. Our group is energetic with good and supportive working atmosphere. Contract terms: The starting monthly salary for the position is 3500 euros and follows the university salary system. The contract includes occupational healthcare as well as university’s support services.

Requirements: A suitable candidate has a doctoral degree in a relevant area. We are looking for a candidate that has expertise in computational methods and machine learning (R, Python, or other relevant software), good knowledge on statistics, and who has good people skills. We expect candidate to have ability to conduct high-quality machine learning and water related research with great passion. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required.

Assessment criteria: In the evaluation process, attention will be given to research skills and competence on machine learning theory and practice. Additionally, good publication record and experience as well as motivation to work in a multidisciplinary research group are particularly meriting.
