The Language Centre at the University of Helsinki is one of Finland's largest language educators in terms of its personnel and syllabus, in addition to being a multilingual and multicultural work community. The Language Centre is responsible for providing the language and communication instruction required for academic degrees in all University of Helsinki faculties and for offering extensive language services to the academic community and external customers.

The Language Centre at the University of Helsinki is inviting applications for two positions of

UNIVERSITY INSTRUCTOR IN ENGLISH

Commencing 1 August 2020.

The positions will focus on teaching academic and professional English to students of the University of Helsinki, including all its various campuses. According to the University of Helsinki Statutes, a person selected for the post of university instructor is required to have an applicable Master’s degree and experience in teaching. Pedagogical training, the ability to produce study materials, and the ability to apply various teaching methodologies are particularly appreciated.

In these particular positions, the appointees should be experienced English as a foreign language teachers. Experience of teaching in university language centres and in a wide range of subject areas will be considered an asset, as will relevant experience in teaching academic writing. The appointees will participate in the joint development activities at the Language Centre, and plan and develop teaching, materials, testing and evaluation. They will also be responsible for administration related to teaching. To successfully attend to the duties of the positions, the appointees should also be cooperative, flexible and willing to develop both their own work and the Language Centre’s activities. Good knowledge of Finnish would be an advantage.

According to the Government Decree on Universities, university instructors are required to be competent in Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory oral and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application.

The salary will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system applied at Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. There is a six-month trial period for the position.
