Postdoctoral researcher in magnetic resonance imaging

We seek an enthusiastic expert in magnetic resonance imaging to work as a postdoctoral researcher in Electromagnetics in health technologies group in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation.

The postdoctoral fellowship includes possibilities to work with researchers from human-centred design and medical fields, to participate in instruction of younger students, communication of research beyond scientific articles, and applying external funding. The position is for a period of 1 year (with possibility for extension to 3 years) beginning from spring 2020.

Salary will be determined upon competence and experience of the applicant following the salary system of Finnish universities (the current salaries for a starting post-doctoral fellow are approximately 3600 eur/month gross). The contract includes occupational health benefits.

Project description and main responsibilities

We are setting up a unique research environment for very low field magnetic resonance imaging (VLF-MRI). The research environment will encompass computational modelling and experimental tools as well as methods for human centred design studies. The information and tools produced in this project can be used for the research and development of new products and services for diagnostics, preventive medicine and wellness.

Our first VLF-MRI system will consist of a ~20 mT magnet for whole-body imaging, allowing flexible control of imaging parameters, permitting studies of the features and capabilities of VLF-MRI and related image processing algorithms. In the project, we will focus on evaluating, testing and optimizing VLF-MRI for various high-value applications, which we will identify in collaboration with human-centred design researchers.

The postdoc will be responsible for thedevelopment of VLF-MRI hardware and related image acquisition methods. The postdoc will also instruct Master students.

What we are looking for

The candidate must have a doctoral degree in physics, electrical engineering or a related discipline. The candidate should have experience in MRI instrumentation, thorough understanding of MRI physics, and scientific writing skills. Knowledge in advanced image reconstruction and processing techniques and skills in programming are highly appreciated.
