The Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for the position of

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER ON SOCIAL INEQUALITIES IN HEALTH

for a three-year, full-time, fixed-term period from 1 April 2020 onwards (or starting point as agreed).

The position of postdoctoral researcher is typically held for three to five years after the completion of a doctoral degree. The aim of the position is to encourage the appointee to further their skills and gain more experience to prepare them for an academic career.

The successful applicant will work in the Population Research Unit under the supervision of Professor Karri Silventoinen. The position will be located at the Faculty of Social Sciences and is closely related to Helsinki Inequality Initiative (INEQ).

The appointee will work with high quality survey and register based data sets from Finland and other countries and is expected to publish the results in top level international peer reviewed scientific journals.

QUALIFICATIONS

The candidate needs to hold a doctoral degree in a suitable field such as Demography, quantitative Sociology/Social policy/Social Psychology, Epidemiology/Public Health or Statistics. The work requires excellent knowledge of statistical methods, experience on working with large scale quantitative data sets, publishing in international scientific journals as well as good academic writing and communication skills in English. The duties of the postdoctoral researcher include teaching for the Faculty of Social Sciences (5% of the annual workload).

The research should be focused on socio-economic health inequalities using quantitative data. We especially appreciate experience in one or several of the following fields of study:

1) Genetic epidemiology (GWAS and/or genetic twin research)

2) Register based health research

3) International comparisons of health related issues focused on affluent societies

The annual gross salary range will be approx. 41,000 – 50,000 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
