University Lecturer
The internationally esteemed Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Helsinki is Finland’s most multidisciplinary unit of research and teaching in educational sciences and teacher education. The aim of the Faculty’s research and teaching is to realise the cultural and social potential of people for the benefit of individuals and humanity in the best possible way.
The Faculty of Educational Sciences invites applications for the position of
UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN EDUCATION
for a fixed term from 1 February 2020 to 31 January 2023.
The university lecturer’s research field will be education, with a focus on the teaching fields of the Master’s Programme in Changing Education (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/admissions/degree-programmes/changing-educati...). The appointee will teach mainly courses offered by the Master’s Programme in Changing Education and other separately negotiated courses and will supervise theses. The appointee will also participate in the other activities of the Master’s Programme in Changing Education and will work actively in Finnish and international expert communities in the field. The appointee’s other duties will include administrative tasks related to teaching.
APPOINTMENT CRITERIA
According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a university lectureship shall hold an applicable doctoral degree and be able to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses. For the present position, knowledge of experimental, quantitative and qualitative research methods, ability to teach in Finnish or Swedish, experience in seminar- and lecture-based university teaching related to the field of education and knowledge of the Finnish educational system will be considered an advantage. In addition, the appointee must be willing and able to develop his or her skills and participate actively in teaching-related research and development projects in Finnish and international networks.
When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention will be paid to the following:
• Scientific publications
• Other scientific activities
• Teaching and supervision experience and other teaching merits
• Pedagogical training
• Development of teaching
• Production of learning material
• Teaching demonstration
The appointee will primarily teach in English. According to the Universities Decree, university lecturers must be fluent in the Finnish or Swedish language. They must also have at least a satisfactory command of spoken and written Swedish or Finnish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. The appointee’s gross monthly salary will range from €3,300 to €5,000, depending on his or her qualifications and previous experience. There is a six-month trial period for the position.
