The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) is an international research institute focusing on human genomics and personalised medicine at the Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE) of the University of Helsinki. FIMM integrates molecular medicine research, technology centre and biobanking infrastructures under one roof, promoting translational research in grand challenge projects, specifically, the impact of genome information from the Finnish population in personalised health and medicine, individualised cancer medicine, and digital molecular medicine. FIMM is part of the the EU-LIFE Community and the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, composed of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the centres for molecular medicine in Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

FIMM is currently seeking an outstanding candidate for the position of

Head of FIMM Metabolomics Unit

for five years in the first instance with the possibility of extension.

Description:
The FIMM Technology Centre provides state-of-the-art biomedical research infrastructures for genomics, metabolomics, high-throughput screening, and other translational research platforms. The FIMM Metabolomics Unit was launched in 2011 and has three highly-skilled staff members running UPLC systems coupled to QQQ mass spectrometer (MS), QToF-MS, and QTRAP-MS; ORBITRAP-MS; and a liquid handling system robot. The unit offers services for high-throughput untargeted and targeted quantitative metabolomics and lipidomics as well as metabolic flux analyses for a wide range of biomedical applications.

We are looking for an innovative and service-oriented senior researcher with significant experience in metabolomics/lipidomics/fluxomics methods and a solid understanding of the underlying challenges in data production and analysis. There is significant scope for method development as research collaborations but the Unit will need to remain self-sustaining. Previous experience in running research service teams and/or in performing statistical analysis for metabolomics/lipidomics/fluxomics research would be a distinctive advantage.

Responsibilities
• Overall responsibility for the unit including finances and team leadership
• Leads strategic planning for the unit and works closely with similar units across Helsinki and nationally to exchange best practices and coordinate future activities
• Keeps up-to-date on the relevant methodologies and identifies opportunities for research collaboration and external funding
• Forecasts customer needs and leads method development to offer in-demand services
• Monitors, interprets and evaluates project outcomes and responds to customer feedback to improve services and introduce new methods
• Analyse and review publications within their specialist field, and write research papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals
• Metabolomics/Lipidomics data processing and statistical data analyses (desirable)
• Development of data analytics workflows including automating repetitive steps (desirable)

Qualification and experience:
• Ph.D in a relevant subject (e.g. chemistry, biochemistry, biostatistics) with several years of postdoctoral experience
• Solid knowledge and working experience in different sample preparation, UPLC and MS systems, and quantitative/qualitative metabolomics/lipidomics methods is essential
• Experience in laboratory, team, and project management (desirable)
• Understanding of statistical methodology and knowledge of suitable software packages for metabolomics and related research (desirable)
• Excellent scientific writing skills (e.g. for customer reports, manuscripts, funding applications)
• Excellent communication skills with ability to discuss project progression and troubleshoot challenges with the team as well as to explain the work carried out to different stakeholders
• Self-motivated and service-minded personality with excellent scientific, problem-solving, troubleshooting, and analyt

Salary and contract:
The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University salary system. A contract will be offered initially for five years (pending Board approval) and long-term extension is possible. This is a full-time position starting as soon as possible upon mutual agreement.
