OtaNano (http://www.otanano.fi) is the national research and development center for micro- and nanotechnology, and it serves as a state-of-the-art working environment for internationally recognized research fields, such as quantum technology, nanoelectronics, micro- and nanophotonics, and new materials. OtaNano is composed of Nanofabrication Centre (Nanofab), Nanomicroscopy Centre (NMC), and Low Temperature Laboratory (LTL), hosted and operated by Aalto and VTT. OtaNano was established in its present form in 2013 to enhance nanoscience and -technology research in Finland. OtaNano laboratory spaces of 4700 m2 serve over 500 users in 90 research groups, including 30 companies. The annual budget of the infrastructure is approximately 8 Me, of which 2,5 Me for investment and 1,5 Me for personnel costs. OtaNano is a Finnish national research infrastructure (RI) since 2009.

We are looking for a

Director of national OtaNano research infrastructure at Aalto University

The position of OtaNano Director is new at Aalto University and, accordingly, you will be in charge of leading and developing the infrastructure as an entity to meet the future needs of a world-class research environment. You will be responsible for creating a long-term strategy for OtaNano and contribute in formulating a functional governance model for it. As part of the strategic development, you will direct OtaNano´s investment planning, funding applications and financial management. In addition to strategic management, you will also be involved in operative management of OtaNano. One of your main tasks is to drive and develop close cooperation with VTT as well as the key stakeholders such as other Finnish and international universities, research institutes and companies. You will take an active role in international development of the infrastructure. In addition, you will further increase OtaNano’s visibility and widen the user base. You report to the Aalto University Vice President of Innovations.

Your experience and ambitions

You have the drive and passion to lead and advance OtaNano to the next level in its capabilities. You have a doctoral degree and background in micro and nanofabrication, device physics and/or measurement and characterization techniques. Since we are looking for an active leader for a multiplayer operation, you have already shown outstanding managerial and leadership skills in practice. Prior experience from similar academic or industrial research organizations is an asset in this role. As we expect you to promote cooperation and partnerships with the stakeholders, we value your ability to operate fluently in national and international research networks with good communication and interaction skills. Experience and knowledge on the funding opportunities offered by relevant EU organizations, national agencies such as Business Finland and the Academy of Finland, as well as connections to industrial partners in the field make you successful in this position. Our main working language is English. Fluency in Finnish is an advantage.
