1 + 1 Years Postdoctoral Researcher in Fluid Structure Interactions

The above-mentioned duty is located in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Marine Technology research group.  The position is immediately available for 12 months and could be renewed subject to satisfactory performance for 1 more year. One of the key themes within our Marine Technology group is the development of risk management models by combining knowledge from risk, traffic management and fluid-structure interactions with focus on ship Safety. Applications range from arctic ships to passenger ships and autonomous ships (see: https://www.aalto.fi/en/department-of-mechanical-engineering/marine-and-arctic-technology . For this position the applicants should have experience in:

  • Naval architecture with some focus on ship design development and assessment.
  • Keen interest on hydrodynamic and especially hydroelastic methods for the prediction of local and global ship wave loads and dynamic response
  • Excellent working knowledge of ship strength assessment modelling techniques by fluid structure interaction methods (e.g. RANS CFD using OpenFoam or STARCCM ; FEA using LSDYNA or ABAQUS).
  • Knowledge of scientific computing (e.g. one or more of FORTRAN, MATLAB, Python, R etc.) is a requirement
  • Some understanding or at least appreciation of risk based ship design principles will be considered an advantage.
