The English programme is part of the Languages Unit in the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences.  The literature section of the English programme has a strong research and teaching profile in spatial literary studies, with an additional focus on mobility, multiculturalism, environmental perspectives, and representations of the Arctic. In our curriculum, we emphasise the socio-historical contexts of literary (and other) texts as well as theoretical perspectives on literature and culture. We offer our students the opportunity to study various forms of cultural expression including film, television series, and comics, as well as storytelling in new media. 

Job Description

The successful candidate will be teaching at both BA and MA levels. The teaching load will be about 8 weekly contact hours per semester. This will include co-teaching introductory courses (“Texts and Culture: Introduction to Literary and Cultural Analysis 1”, “Genres in Context: Literary and Cultural Analysis 2” and “Postcolonial Cultures and Global Literatures in English”), teaching thematic seminars, as well as supervising BA theses. They will also be expected to contribute to the MA-level course “Theories of Space and Place” and to an intermediate-level BA course on literary theory and methods. The successful candidate will also participate in the research activities of the department, such as the activities of the Research Group on Spatial Studies and Environmental Humanities. They will also take on some administrative duties (e.g. academic advising and curriculum development). 

Requirements

Candidates are required to have a PhD in English Literature, a strong research profile including high-level publications, as well as relevant academic teaching experience. They are expected to have (an) ongoing research project(s) that connect(s) with our research profile. A focus on spatial literary studies and/or the additional areas of research listed above is therefore desirable. Candidates should be able to teach literary texts from a range of periods and cultural contexts. They are also expected to have a minimum of 10 credits (or equivalent) in university pedagogy. We appreciate expertise on a broad range of literary and visual texts and genres.

We offer

We offer a fixed-term employment of 21 months (15 August 2020 – 15 May 2022; the trial period is 6 months). The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The position of a University Lecturer is placed on the job demands level 6 (teaching and research staff). A typical starting salary is around 4000 EUR/month.

Etsimme määräaikaiseen työsuhteeseen englanninkielisen kirjallisuuden yliopistonlehtoria ajalle 15.8.2020-15.5.2022. Tehtävä sijoittuu Informaatioteknologian ja viestinnän tiedekunnassa kielten yksikköön ja kielten tutkinto-ohjelman englannin opintosuuntaan. Englannin kirjallisuuden opetus- ja tutkimusprofiilissa painottuvat tilateoreettiset lähestymistavat kirjallisiin ja visuaalisiin teksteihin sekä lisäksi liikkuvuuden, monikulttuurisuuden, ympäristönäkökulmien sekä arktisen alueen representaatioiden tutkimus. Opetussuunnitelmassa korostamme kirjallisten ja visuaalisten tekstien sosiohistoriallista kontekstia samoin kuin teoreettisia näkökulmia kirjallisuuteen ja kulttuuriin. Tarjoamme opiskelijoille mahdollisuuden perehtyä monimuotoiseen kulttuuriseen ilmaisuun mm. elokuvien, televisiosarjojen, sarjakuvien ja uusien medioiden tarinankerronnan kautta.  

Tehtäviin kuuluu aihealueen opetusta kandidaatti- ja maisterivaiheessa sekä hakijan osaamisen ja taustan mukaan myös tutkimustehtäviä ja hallinnollisia tehtäviä.
