The Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis https://math.aalto.fi/en/ at the School of Science of Aalto University invites applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level. The main research areas of the department are:

• Algebra and discrete mathematics,
• Analysis and nonlinear partial differential equations,
• Numerical analysis and mechanics,
• Stochastics and statistics,
• Systems and operations research.

Applications in all areas of mathematics are welcomed, with algebra and discrete mathematics highlighted.

Applicants should demonstrate excellent research potential and ability to teach. As the department is committed to fostering an inclusive environment with a diverse faculty body, applications from members of groups that have been underrepresented in mathematics are particularly sought. The position has a competitive salary and starting package, and the contract also includes occupational health benefits. The starting date for the position is negotiable.

Job requirements

Only Assistant Professor level applications are considered in this call. Applicants are required to have a doctoral degree in mathematics or a related field and a fluent command of English.

The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of their research achievements in relation to their career stage, their teaching merits and activity in the scientific community. Short-listed applicants will be invited for a full-day visit to present and discuss their research with the faculty of the department. Evaluation at the Assistant Professor level follows the tenure track system of Aalto University and is mainly based on research merits as well as the applicant’s potential.

A person at any level of the tenure track system is expected to perform world‐class research, teach, advise, advance education, be an active member of the international scientific community, and to exhibit academic leadership. Career advances on the tenure track are based on scheduled performance assessments that take into account the candidate’s merits in all these areas.
