The University of Oulu is an international scientific community with 15,000 students and approximately 3,000 employees. We are now looking for two Doctoral Students in Learning and Educational Technology research unit (LET) for the period from May 2020 to April 2024. LET (http://www.oulu.fi/let/) is located at the Faculty of Education and its research contributes to Understanding Humans in Change and Digital Solutions in Sensing and Interactions, the two strategic research areas of the University of Oulu in working to understand how to increase human learning competence for the 21st century needs. LET research focuses on understanding the learning and interaction processes at individual and group levels and studying how digitalization can make these processes adaptive for ongoing learning in various contexts. Researchers use technology and multimodal data to study and make visible these mental and interactive processes, but also to support them for efficient and effective learning. LET is actively working within the University of Oulu profiling theme Generation Z and beyond: Co-evolution of human capabilities and intelligent technologies in the 21st century (GenZ). https://www.oulu.fi/genz/

The position of a Doctoral Student requires a master’s degree and an approved research plan. The application for a right to study must be sent to the Oulu Graduate School usually before the Doctoral Student’s employment term starts or, at the latest, immediately after it has started. We are looking for a candidate who has a strong background in, and whose research interests are related to the themes of LET focusing specifically on a) the cognitive and motivational learning and interaction processes at individual and groups levels or b) studying how technological solutions can support learning and interaction processes. We appreciate strong understanding on learning theories and self-regulated learning as well as experience with process-oriented methods. Ability to conduct independent scholarly research in English and collaborative working skills is required.

The assessment of an application is based on the quality of the research plan, scientific merits and other academic qualifications of the applicant, and the significance of the research plan in relation to the research themes of LET.  Other things being equal, priority will be given to a candidate whose research focuses on research themes carried at Let.

The salary of the appointed researcher will be based on the demand level (levels 2-4) chart for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition to the basic salary, an additional salary component (not more than 50% of the basic salary level) will be paid based on personal achievement and performance.

A separate agreement will be made on the teaching duties connected with the position within the framework of an annual work plan of 1624 hours, with the maximum being 5 % of the annual working hours as per the existing collective agreement. The position is subject to a trial period of 6 months.
