The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry is located on the Viikki campus. The Department of Forest Sciences invites applications for the position of a

POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER to a project: Deep learning of Ecosystem Service Indicator Maps for Agile and Precise forest planning (DESIMAP)

The position is a part of the DESIMAP project funded by the Academy of Finland and led by Professor Jari Vauhkonen. The aim of the DESIMAP project is to develop computational methods for forest management planning to be able to better utilize all information on small computation units provided by modern forest inventories. We seek for a data scientist to implement novel deep learning based solutions to learn from the uncertainties in the data as well as successes of previously solved forest planning problems, to reduce the computational complexity and improve reliability of forest planning proposals based on forest resource map data.

Requirements
- Doctoral degree in data science or applied mathematics, statistics, or other relevant field
- Knowledge of machine learning and deep learning in general. Detailed knowledge and preferably hands-on experience in implementing either convolutional neutral net-, deep reinforcement learning-, or Bayesian filtering-based solutions
- Good programming skills and demonstrated ability to implement methods in selected programming language or script-based computing environment such as Python, C++, Java, R or Matlab
- Ability to work independently
- Enthusiasm towards scientific research and eagerness to learn
- Good writing and other presentation skills.

The full-time position is available for three years. The post-doctoral researcher can start in August 2020 or according to agreement – however, the position can be filled until 31.8.2023. The salary of the successful candidate will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. The salary will be between 3 112 – 4 403 €/month, depending on the qualifications and experience of the appointee. A six month trial period will be applied.
