At the University of Jyväskylä, everyone can find their place in the human-centred environment of 2,700 experts and 14,700 students. Our goal is to create wisdom and wellbeing for us all. It is essential that each member of the community thrives and has opportunities to develop and grow. We cherish openness of thinking as well as the balance between research and education. Our naturally beautiful campus is located at the heart of the city of Jyväskylä. JYU is the third largest employer in Central Finland.

Experimental particle physics group in the Department of Physics in the University of Jyväskylä seeks for

Doctoral student, beginning August 17, 2020 or as agreed. The maximum length of the employment contract is four years.

The main research fields at the Department of Physics are subatomic physics and material physics. One branch in subatomic physics is strong interactions and ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions, in which the department hosts both theory and experimental groups. Theory group concentrates on phenomenology of strong interactions and experimental group on activities in the ALICE experiment. The Department has a broad program of studies in particle physics and cosmology, and very active discussions between theory and experimental groups, like common weekly seminars.

The experimental research group focuses on data analysis related to analysis of flow phenomena and jet physics using data collected by the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC. The group also has a significant responsibility in one the subsystems of the ALICE, the Fast Interaction Trigger (FIT) detector. The main duties of the doctoral student are:

  • performing data analysis on aforementioned topics
  • participation to activities in ALICE upgrade
  • performing detector expert shifts for FIT

The Doctoral student will work mostly in Jyväskylä, but we aim to provide one longer period, circa 12 months, at CERN during the thesis process. On top of the research tasks, doctoral students have limited teaching duties at the department.

The eligible candidate should have, or be about to obtain, a suitable degree (a Master’s Degree or equivalent) and background in physics or engineering. The candidate is expected to have experience in programming, as the data analysis will be performed using C++. We appreciate studies in particle physics and experience in data analysis tasks. Prior knowledge or working with particle detectors and/or electronics strengthens the application.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of a Doctoral student are in accordance with the University of Jyväskylä Regulations. The selected person must also fulfill language requirements set for the selection of PhD students. Different options to fulfill these requirements will be communicated to the selected persons.

The Doctoral student must have a permission for post-graduate studies at the University of Jyväskylä. If the applicant does not have permission for post-graduate studies, it must be applied with a separate application procedure from the Faculty of Mathematics and Science after selection for the position.

The initial salary of the doctoral student is approximately 2200 € / month. As the dissertation work progresses, the salary will be revised in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. For the visiting period at CERN, we will provide a mobility compensation to cover higher living costs at the Geneva region.

A trial period of six months will be used when the position is first filled.
