Laboratory Automation Engineer/Scientist

Description of position
We are looking for a talented and innovative engineer or scientist with a problem solving mindset to join our Molecule Profiling team within Orion R&D in Turku. The successful candidate will join a team of around 24 scientists and technicians, providing laboratory and automation support for tip-based and acoustic liquid handlers, automated screening systems, plate-based and high-content plate readers, and other types of laboratory equipment.
You will be working hand in hand with biologists and other automation staff to develop the wetware, hardware, and software infrastructure. The Laboratory Automation Engineer/Scientist is responsible for successful development, implementation, calibration, and validation of new equipment and processes in the laboratory. The Laboratory Automation Engineer / Scientist also assists in the transfer of newly developed assays from the development stage to routine practice in the laboratory (internally and externally). Key responsibilities in more detail include:
- Developing automated processes on different systems, from simple semi-automatic electronic pipettes to high-throughput screening robots
- Developing high-throughput screening platform
- Performing the transfer of biological tests on automated systems. Conducting high-throughput screening campaigns on different assays, such as biochemical tests, cellular assays, imaging, and electrophysiology
- Providing training and support to users on automation devices
- Ensuring the spread of the practice of automation within the team
- Monitoring supplier relationships for automated systems. Contributing to the investment plan on these aspects e.g. by drafting specifications
- Ensuring a constant technological evaluation and contributing to the technological and scientific dynamics of the department
- Contributing to the maintenance and monitoring of equipment in collaboration with the other members of the group
- Working as a team and develop cross-functional interactions within and outside the Global Medicine Design function
Description of unit
Molecule Profiling unit in Global Medicine Design Function is responsible for translating new drug targets to new therapeutics together with other line functions in Orion R&D. We are providing assay services and scientific expertise in in vitro pharmacology, toxicology and ADME for all discovery projects in-house, supporting our three therapy areas, CNS, Oncology and Rare Diseases. As an expert of your own field, you will be a member of multi-disciplinary team jointly innovating and developing new treatments for the patients.

Requirements
Your best qualifications are interest and familiarity with computerized and automated systems and ability to work in a team-oriented environment. Additionally, smooth take-over of this position is easier if you have
- Degree in engineering or life sciences
- 4+ years of experience in a laboratory setting
- Expertise in robotics and automation
- Ideally knowledge of bioassays, if possible in high-throughput screening
- Previous experience in liquid handling automation, sample handling automation, and integrated robotic systems is highly desirable
- You are capable for creative thinking and detail-oriented personality
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, proficiency in Finnish is a plus
