The Aleksanteri Institute functions as a national centre of research, study and expertise pertaining to Russia and Eastern Europe, particularly in the social sciences and humanities. The Faculty of Arts, the Aleksanteri Institute and the GULAGECHOES project invite applications for the position of
DOCTORAL CANDIDATE
For a fixed term of 3 years. The doctoral candidate will be conducting full-time research and work towards the completion of a PhD-thesis within the field of the GULAGECHOES project. The position may include some teaching or administrative duties (no more than 5%).
The position is associated with the European Research Council Project, “Gulag Echoes in the multicultural prison: historical and geographical influences on the identity and politics of ethnic minority prisoners in the communist successor states of Russia Europe”, which is held by Professor Judith Pallot at the Aleksanteri Institute. The PhD student will be a member of the project team. The successful candidate will work on a topic under one of the following sub-headings:
1. The experiences of ethnic minority prisoners in Eastern Europe from 1945 to the present day
2. The treatment of Romani by the prison systems of East Central Europe and the Balkans
3. Legal aspects of the prison regimes of communist successor states in Europe and former Soviet Union.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants should hold a Masters degree in a field that is relevant to the research topic listed above and have a high quality research proposal. Relevant disciplines are anthropology, sociology, criminology/penology, law. Other requirements include proven ability and motivation to do independent research and to pursue postgraduate studies and a doctoral degree according to the study plan and research proposal, and to have excellent collaboration skills. The candidate will be fluent in one or more East European languages, with a preference for a knowledge of Romanian. Fluency in English language is required. The appointee is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki but may spend periods conducting fieldwork in the case study country(ies).
The appointee should either already have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of the appointment, or apply for the right and obtain it within the probationary period of six months of their appointment.
