The University of Helsinki and Finnish Museum of Natural History are developing FinBIF, the Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility (https://laji.fi). The aim of FinBIF is to combine all biodiversity data from Finland to one place for government officials, researchers and for the general public. Our occurrence data warehouse contains at the moment over 35 million records and is growing all the time. Geo-spatial information about the species is important for their protection in land-use design.

We are now looking for a GIS SPECIALIST

in our team consisting of fifteen persons. The main task is to set up GIS interfaces (WWS, WMS) on top of our existing data using for example GeoServer. In addition, the GIS specialist helps with information product design. In this job you can also take part in implementation of data transfer mechanism between the FinBIF data warehouse and the GIS database, help design performance of the service and plan maintaining backups and the server infrastructure.

ABOUT YOU

In order to succeed in this role we expect you to have good knowledge and skills of one or more GIS servers. We also appreciate basic Unix knowledge, SQL database skills, experience in design and implementation of GIS services.

The position is a fixed term position: 1.8.2020 - 31.12.2021
The salary consists of job demand level 9 and personal performance level. The work language is English or Finnish. It is possible to work part time as well if you are for example finishing your studies.
