The Faculty of Social Sciences in Tampere University is seeking a motivated and talented applicant for a Postdoctoral Researcher Position in the Human Information Processing Laboratory, which is part of the Psychology degree programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences. The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of 2 years from September 2020.

Job description

Research in the Human Information Processing Laboratory is focused on investigating how people process social information, such as faces. Our goal is to understand better the cognitive, neural, and developmental mechanisms involved in the perception of human faces and other nonverbal signals, and the factors contributing to individual differences in processing social information. In our studies, we use a range of psychophysiological methods (EEG, ECG, EMG, SCR), eye-tracking, questionnaire data and observational assessments (e.g., parental sensitivity, infant empathy). Some studies also collect biological samples for hormonal/genetic analyses. The participants in our studies range from young infants and children to adults, including both typically developing individuals as well as individuals with developmental disorders (e.g., autism spectrum disorder) or psychiatric problems (e.g., social anxiety).

In this call, we are seeking a candidate who will develop their career as an independent researcher and contribute to either or both of the following two lines of research. Click on the links for information about the projects.

  1. TransParent: Parental Brain, Hormones, and Behavior Across the Transition to Parenthood. The TransParent project investigates behavioral, physiological, and hormonal responses to infants’ emotion signals during pregnancy and the child’s first year to find out whether central aspects of parent-child interaction change during the transition to parenthood and whether such changes are associated with postnatal caregiving quality.
  2. Empathy in Early Childhood. The main goals of this longitudinal research beginning from infancy are to investigate whether the development of empathy, prosocial behavior, and callous-unemotional traits in early childhood are associated with children’s emotion processing, and to explore the biological and environmental factors affecting their development.

Within both lines of research, there will be opportunities for the researcher to design new research questions and studies, and use a variety of methods. There are also opportunities to collaborate with researchers at other Finnish institutions and with a network of international collaborators involved in these projects (e.g., the Netherlands, Scotland, Israel, USA). A small amount of teaching (maximum of 5% of total annual working time) is also expected from the postdoctoral researcher.

Requirements

You are a highly motivated researcher holding a PhD in Psychology or a closely related field that is relevant for the described research topics. Experience and expertise in the relevant methods (psychophysiology, eye-tracking, observational assessment, hormonal measurements) and programming are considered an advantage. You have analytical and writing skills that are evidenced by your publication record. You are proficient in English, both written and spoken.

Candidate selection will be based on the level of expertise and plans regarding research for the postdoctoral period. These will be evaluated on the basis of the motivation letter and merits in scientific publishing.

We offer

Temporary assignment for a two-year period of 1.9.2020-31.8.2022. We offer you a research environment in a laboratory performing high-quality research on social information processing.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on level 5-6 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for Postdoctoral Researchers is approximately 3400—3700 EUR/month. A trial period of six (6) months applies to all our new employees.

We offer a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus and several restaurants and cafés on campus with staff discounts. Please read more about working at Tampere University.

How to apply

Please submit your application through our online recruitment system. The closing date for applications is 12 June 2020 (23:59 EET / UTC+3). Please write your application and all the accompanying documentation in English and attach them in PDF format.

Please attach the following documents to your application:
