The Department of Physics, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science is currently seeking to recruit staff for the position of

Postdoctoral Researcher in physics beginning September 1, 2020 or as agreed, for a fixed-term of two years.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to join our research group to work in the Nanoscience Center in an interdisciplinary project combining experimental nanophysics and microbiology. We aim to build and measure novel nanostructures using self-organizing, ordered bacterial colonies, and apply them in the field of metamaterials to control heat and light (phonons and photons). The main goals of the project are
i) To control bacterial biofilm growth in such a manner that ordered 3D micron-scale microbial colonies are formed
ii) To fabricate thermal conductance and thermal radiation measurement samples using the bacterial colonies and advanced nanofabrication techniques
iii) To measure the modified phononic and photonic response of structures, at cryogenic temperatures for phononics, and at room temperature for photonics.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of postdoctoral researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to have good skills in English language.

A suitable candidate will have a PhD degree, or be about to obtain a PhD in experimental physics, with experience in collaborative projects in microbiology considered a big bonus. Experience in working in a clean room environment is a requirement. Candidates with practical experience with advanced nanofabrication techniques such as electron- and ion-beam lithography and microscopy, 3D direct laser writing and plasma etching are particularly highly valued, as is experience in cryogenic measurements. Practical familiarity with microbiological techniques is also relevant, in particular experience with electron- and/or ion beam microscopy of delicate biological samples (including sample preparation).

The annual salary range will be approximately 40,000 - 51,000 EUR (gross income, including holiday bonus), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.

A trial period of six months will be used when the position is first filled.
