The Department of Physics is currently seeking to recruit staff for the position of

Doctoral Student in Physics, starting 3 September 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter, contract length being maximum of four years.

The main research fields at the Department of Physics are subatomic physics and material physics. In the Accelerator Laboratory multiple research groups engages these field. The accelerator based materials physics research group activities can be divided into three main areas: 1) fundamental studies of ion–matter interactions, 2) detector, data acquisition and analysis software development and 3) application of ion beam techniques for materials and thin film studies.

We are seeking a highly motivated person to join in accelerator based materials physics research group in the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. The tasks of the Doctoral Student are connected to Dr. Mikko Laitinen’s Academy research fellow project, which focuses on developing the applicability of ToF-ERDA by better understanding the scattering cross sections, faster energy detectors and more versatile analysis software in the low energy heavy ion regime. The PhD thesis work will focus either on the more fundamental scattering processes or to the energy detectors, both requiring good experimental skills. During the thesis work also simulation programs will need to be utilized.

The Doctoral student will work mostly in Jyväskylä, but we aim to provide at least one period abroad during the thesis process. On top of the research tasks, doctoral students have limited teaching duties at the department.

The eligible candidate should have, or be about to obtain, a suitable degree (a Master’s Degree or equivalent) and background in physics or engineering. The candidate is expected to have experience in detector or equipment building, simulations skills and possible previous CAD working background. We appreciate studies in materials and accelerator based physics and experience in data analysis tasks. Prior knowledge or hands-on experience with RBS and ToF-ERDA methods, software coding work, particle detectors and/or electronics strengthens the application.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of doctoral student are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The selected person is required to have a command of English language.

Doctoral Student has to be accepted as a student for post-graduate studies in the University of Jyväskylä. If the applicant does not have permission for post-graduate studies in the University of Jyväskylä, it must be applied with a separate application procedure from the faculty after selection for the position.

The initial salary of a doctoral student is typically around 2200-2300 € / month. As the dissertation work progresses, the salary will be revised in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. For the visiting period(s) abroad, we will provide a mobility compensation to cover higher living costs.

A trial period of six months will be used when the position is first filled.
