The University of Turku is a world-class multidisciplinary research university which offers interesting challenges and a unique vantage point to national and international research and education.

Communication systems lab at Department of Future Technologies, University of Turku is looking for

1-3 project researchers / PhD candidates or research assistants

on security and safety of autonomous road vehicles. The positions are fixed term. The positions will be filled as soon as possible, preferably already starting from 1.8.2020, but no later than 1.9.2020. All positions will end 30.4.2021. The positions are full-time, but part-time work is also possible by mutual agreement. The positions are part of the ECSEL funded Programmable Systems for Intelligence in Automobiles (PRYSTINE) project. It involves 60 prominent industry players, universities, and research institutes all over Europe. The overall aim of the project is developing fail-operational urban surround perception (FUSION) to enable safe automated driving in urban and rural environments.


Key tasks

Our contribution to the project include requirements specification, system-level design, system integration, and validation through live testing of a vehicle equipped with the fail-operational autonomous controller developed in the project. The project researchers will, depending on their expertise and profile,  

 

  1. Develop security solutions, sensor fusion and/or decision making for autonomous systems, encompassing communication links, components, and data protection
  2. Participate in live testing of the developed controller in a heavy-duty vehicle demonstrator built for the project
  3. Publish the results of their work in international scientific publications

Successful candidates for project researcher and PhD candidate position must possess an applicable Master of Science degree, completed with very good grades.

We are primarily searching for candidate(s) for the project researcher and/or PhD candidate position(s). If a suitable person cannot be found, candidate(s) who have completed all their coursework for the Master of Science degree can also be considered, if they have experience relevant to the project. In this case, the job title will be research assistant.

We expect the candidate to have educational background in one of the following areas and expertise in one of for security and safety engineering for autonomous vehicles to have

  • Cyber security, embedded systems, software engineering, or data science educational background or equivalent experience
  • Ability to design, develop and implement security solutions and/or embedded systems
  • Experience in programming (C, C++, Python)

In addition, for the positions we appreciate

  • Ability to write scientific publications
  • Excellent oral and written English skills
  • Familiarity with data analysis methods
  • Good general programming skills
  • Software development experience
  • High motivation and work efficiency

The salaries are determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel. For a Project researcher / PhD candidate, the salary is at levels 2-4 on the job demands chart, where the task specific salary component is 2055,66–2563,09 euro per month. For a research assistant, the salary is at the level 1 on the job demands chart, where the task specific salary component is 1869,13 euro per month. In addition, a personal work performance component will be paid. The personal performance component is a 6% – 50% of the task-specific base salary. There is a trial period of six months.
