The University of Oulu is an international scientific community with approximately 15,000 students and 3,000 employees. Its strengths are in its wide multidisciplinary study and research interests, modern research and study environment, and extensive cooperation with international educational and research institutes.

The position is open at the Ecology and Genetics Research Unit in the Faculty of Science.

Description of the position

The Academy Research Fellow project “Towards understanding the control of wood formation in conifers” focuses on the expression changes in the cambial zone of Norway spruce at high-resolution, single-cell level in order to elucidate unique features of coniferous wood formation. In addition, the project aims to validate our co-expression inference results regarding the putative novel regulators of secondary cell wall formation (Jokipii-Lukkari et al. 2018. Plant Physiology 176: 2851-2870).

Postdoctoral position in the project is scheduled to be filled from September 2020 for two years.

Requirements

To succeed in the position the candidate is required to hold a PhD in plant physiology, molecular biology, biochemistry or related field. The candidate is expected to have extensive knowledge on molecular methods (such as expression of recombinant proteins, EMSA and plant transformation). Previous experience in working with trees and knowledge on RNAseq methods are regarded as assets.

The candidate is required to conduct research independently and to be fluent in English.  Special emphasis will be given to research expertise within the subject field, demonstrated by an international publications record. Some post-doctoral experience is considered as a benefit. The research is conducted in collaboration with international research groups, hence good skills in collaborative working and communication are appreciated.

Terms of employment

The duration of the position is 2 years, beginning on September 1, 2020 at earliest. A six-month trial period will be applied to the position.

The salary is in accordance with the university salary system (for teaching and research personnel, level 5 – 6). In addition to the basic salary, supplementary salary will be paid for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 50 % of the basic salary level for the post. The typical salary for a starting postdoctoral researcher is €3,400 per month.
