The University of Turku is a world-class multidisciplinary research university which offers interesting challenges and a unique vantage point to national and international research and education.

A fixed-term position is open for a doctoral candidate in biomedical data analysis and microbial ecology.

The project examines the variation of microbial ecosystems in experimental and natural environments. The research focuses on the development and application of computational and bioinformatics methods in ongoing collaboration projects. The postgraduate research work provides opportunities to acquire comprehensive knowledge on modern data analysis and machine learning methods. The thesis work is carried out in University of Turku under the supervision of associate prof. Leo Lahti (data science; Department of Future Technologies). The work is full-time and will start as soon as possible according to the agreement, preferably as early as October 1, 2020. The duration of the employment is six (6) months, but further opportunities may be discussed during the employment.

We expect independence, collaboration and analytical skills, and motivation to work in an interdisciplinary team on the applications of scientific computing. Background in relevant fields, such as mathematics, statistics, physics, ecology, (bio)informatics, computer science, or other relevant field, and experience on scientific programming will considered an advantage. Fluent English skills are critical for the work. Eligible applicants have a MSc or MSc tech degree.

The salaries are determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel. For a doctoral candidate the salary will be on levels 2-4  on the job demands chart, where the task specific salary component is 2055,66- 2563,09 euros per month. In addition, a personal work performance component will be paid. The personal performance component is a 6% - 50% of the task-specific salary component. 


A three (3) month trial period applies to the position.
