The Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Turku, invites applications for the fixed term position of

A Senior Researcher (recent postdoc) to the project “The applicability of altmetrics for research assessment” at the Research Unit for the Sociology of Education (RUSE).

The person to be chosen to the position is expected to begin in their employment in 1st January 2021 or according to agreement. The contract will last for 36 months.

The applicability of altmetrics for research assessment is a four-year research project financed by the Academy of Finland. This project will investigate characteristics of the individuals and the mechanisms generating the online attention some scientific publications receive and with that, provide a better understanding of the applicability of altmetrics for research assessment.

The person chosen to the position will design and conduct quantitative studies using bibliographic metadata of scholarly publications and altmetrics.

The person chosen to the position is expected to have a) a PhD in information science, sociology of science, statistics, computer science, or in a field related to the topics of the project, b) strong skills in quantitative methods, c) the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and d) publications on the topics related to the project. The applicants are expected to have good written and verbal command of English.

Experience in quantitative social science research, social network analysis, and use of large bibliometric and/or altmetric datasets, and interest in scholarly communication and open science, are seen as advantages.

The eligibility criteria for the position are defined in the rules of procedure of the University of Turku (section 37).

The salary is in accordance with the University salary system for teaching and research personnel levels 5–6 where the work-specific salary component is between 2967,84–3460,91 euro/month. The component based on personal performance adds 6–50 % to this salary.

There will be a trial period of six months.

The application should include a) a motivation letter describing the applicant’s own research interests in the field and how they relate to the project, b) a CV, c) a list of publications, d) contact information of two references.
