The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), a unit of HiLIFE with more than 250 staff, is a research institute focused on human genomics and personalised medicine. FIMM integrates molecular medicine research, technology centre and biobanking infrastructures under one roof, promoting translational research in grand challenge projects, specifically, the impact of genome information from the Finnish population in personalised health and medicine, individualised cancer medicine, and digital molecular medicine. FIMM is part of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, composed of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the centres for molecular medicine in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and the EU-LIFE Community.

Technician for sequencing core facility
in Technology Centre Sequencing Unit.

FIMM Tech Centre Sequencing Unit is a service laboratory providing tailored DNA and RNA analysis services for Finnish scientific community. We use state-of-the-art technology and methods to help our customers solve the puzzles of life science. Our team consist of 10 multidisciplinary experts working together with other core units within FIMM Technology Centre. Sequencing Unit has a long history for delivering Sanger and NGS sequencing services.

The primary duty of the technician is to operate the Sanger sequencing service process. The process covers reception of orders and samples from our customers, processing of samples using ABI3730xl Sequencing Instrument, data QC and release of the results back to customers. The technician also performs monthly invoicing of provided services. The work requires excellent attention to detail and ability and willingness for constant learning in a rapidly developing field of life sciences. Working experience in the field of genomics is considered beneficial.

We expect the successful candidate to
• hold a degree of laboratory technician, B.Sc. or equivalent in the field of life sciences
• be familiar with good laboratory practices
• be familiar with wet-lab methods including DNA/RNA extraction, concentration measurements for nucleic acids, gel electrophoresis and sequencing technologies.
• be fluent in written and spoken Finnish and English. The working language of FIMM as HiLIFE unit is English
• have excellent organizational, communication and problem-solving skills
• be capable of working independently as well as cooperating harmoniously with members of the team
• have service minded attitude with customer service skills

The salary will be commensurate with qualifications based on the University of Helsinki salary system and is depending on the credentials, previous experience and performance of the candidate.

Position is initially for 4 years and may be renewed. The post will include a trial period of 6 months. Position is starting upon mutual agreement but by January 2021 the latest.
