Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en

The Experimental Quantum Optics group is a diverse research group that was established in January 2019. Our research focuses on structuring single photons to study high-dimensional quantum states and enhance quantum information schemes. We also develop and implement novel ways of light-matter interactions in the quantum regime, thereby combining findings from nonlinear optics, quantum plasmonics, and quantum optics. Thus, while focusing on quantum photonics research and implementing quantum experiments, the Postdoctoral research work can also include a broad range of different tasks, ranging from simulating and calculating optical effects, to developing novel tools for photonics and plasmonics.

Job description

There are plenty of ongoing projects in high-dimensional quantum photonics, quantum plasmonics and studies on structured light, which will benefit from the postdoc's support, contribution and ideas. In addition, we also encourage and support the candidate in implementing her/his own ideas and bringing new perspectives into the group’s research. Finally, the postdoctoral candidate will be involved in teaching duties as well as supervision of the group’s students.

If you are interested to work in a young research group with newly equipped quantum optics laboratories, very talented students, and an open stimulating research environment, we are happy to receive your application.

Requirements

Postdoctoral Research Fellows must hold an internationally-recognized PhD degree (or have the PhD defense scheduled within the next couple of months) in experimental quantum optics, quantum plasmonics, other fields of quantum research or photonics. Excellent written and spoken English skills are essential. In addition, the position requires the capacity for independent scholarly activity and good teaching skills. Knowledge in programming languages, e.g. Python, Matlab, Labview or Lumerical etc. are highly appreciated and some expertise in the quantum information theory and quantum foundations are advantageous. The candidate should further like to work in an international, collaborative research group, enjoy working with colleagues (national & international) and help in supervising students and teaching tasks.

We offer

The Postdoctoral position will be offered for 1-2 years with a possibility of extension and will be preferably filled beginning of 2021 with some flexibility in the starting date.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The position of a Postdoctoral Research Fellow is placed on the job demands levels 5-6 (teaching and research staff). A typical starting salary of a Postdoctoral Research Fellow is around 3400-3700 EUR/month.

We offer a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus and several restaurants and cafés on campus with staff discounts. Please read more about working at Tampere University.

The group is embedded into a strong photonics research hub at the Tampere University, Finland, with activities ranging from nanofabrication, nonlinear optics of novel media, theoretical optics, metamaterials, high power fiber lasers to the development of new techniques for optical spectroscopy. Tampere University also leads the Photonics Flagship initiative PREIN of the Academy of Finland. Hence, our research takes place in a world-leading photonics research institution with collaborations within a large network of experts across the world.

How to apply

As an employer we are committed to promoting diversity within our staff and would like to encourage all interested applicants, irrespective of their gender and backgrounds to apply.

Please submit your application through our online recruitment system. The closing date for applications is 23 October 2020 (at 23.59 EEST / 20.59 UTC). Please write your application and all accompanying documents in English and attach them in PDF format.

Applications should include the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae according to TENK guidelines (https://www.tenk.fi/en/template-researchers-curriculum-vitae)
  • List of publications according to Academy of Finland guidelines (https://www.aka.fi/en/funding/apply-for-funding/az-index-of-application-guidelines/list-of-publications/)
