The Doctoral Programme in Business and Technology Management provides students with excellent research skills, broad expertise in industrial engineering and management, and an in-depth understanding of information and knowledge management. Our students develop technological and business expertise that allows them to create new scientific knowledge and address societally significant challenges that require in-depth analysis. The programme is intended for applicants who hold a master's degree in technology, economics or an applicable field. In addition to graduates from the Master’s Degree Programme in Industrial Engineering and Management and the Master’s Degree Programme in Information and Knowledge Management, the Doctoral Programme in Business and Technology Management attracts graduates with a degree in, for example, technology, business or economics.

We are seeking doctoral researchers with the potential to offer new research insights, contribute to the generation of new knowledge, address the challenges facing our society, and apply their knowledge in the different fields of business and technology management. After completing the programme, our graduates are awarded the degree of Doctor of Science in Technology (or PhD) and typically move into leadership roles in industry, research and teaching positions in universities or universities of applied sciences, or research and management positions in research institutions. Extensive career opportunities are also available for our graduates in industry and public administration.

Job description


 We have fully funded Doctoral Researcher (postgraduate student) positions open to candidates willing to carry out a research project towards a doctoral degree (D. Sc. Tech. / PhD). Most of the positions are fully funded for four years, but shorter periods are also possible. The doctoral researchers are supposed to carry out research in one of the two departments involved in the doctoral program, preferably in one of the thematic areas listed below. 

1) Industrial Engineering and Management 

Our research interests in Industrial Engineering and Management are related to the phenomenon of sustainable technology-centric competitive advantage. Our interests lie in the management of industrial firms in a safe, sustainable, innovative and efficient way. We search for answers to questions such as how do organizations create and utilize resources in creating value efficiently and effectively, and what resources do organizations need in a technology-centric, dynamic industry to achieve sustained competitive advantage.

Examples of topical areas at Industrial Management:

  • Integrating advanced data, human, and risk analytics into management
  • Strategic technology and innovation management
  • Sustainable value creation through projects, industrial services, or manufacturing

2) Information and Knowledge Management

Our research interests in Information and Knowledge Management are on offering, utilizing and managing information and knowledge in organizations in order to improve their competitive advantage. We search answers to questions such as how information and/or knowledge is best used by different stakeholders, how it is offered, how it creates value, how it can be improved, and why different challenges and obstacles emerge. In particular, we are interested in value creation mechanisms, such as information technologies, data assets, data analytics, work systems, and different types of networks.

Examples of research topics at Information and Knowledge Management:

  • Digital transformation in data-driven businesses
  • Information systems management and use
  • Knowledge-based value creation, knowledge networks and work systems

Requirements

You need to have a Master’s degree completed by 31 December 2020 and fulfill the eligibility requirements for the Doctoral Programme (see How to apply > Eligibility criteria). Selected candidates must complete their research plan and apply to the doctoral programme officially during the trial period in line with the application guidelines (unless they already have a position in the programme).

The successful applicants are highly motivated and ambitious students. Proficiency to carry out goal-oriented work, good skills to deliver oral and written presentations of research results, as well as good cooperation abilities will be emphasized.

Candidates are selected based on the level of promise that they show, and this will be evaluated on the basis of their study and research plans, their previous success in studies and merits in writing the doctoral thesis and / or scientific publishing.

We are offering the successful candidates fully funded four-year positions as Doctoral Researchers, commencing in February 2021 (or shorter terms, as proposed by applicants). We offer you high-quality supervision and the freedom to develop your ideas in a supportive and inspirational research environment. A trial period of six (6) months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Doctoral Researcher is placed on level 2—4 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researchers is approximately 2350—2450 EUR/month. Our incentive salary system for Doctoral Researchers ensures salary increases based on the progress of the doctoral degree and thesis.
