Some degrees granted by the Faculty are completed at the bilingual Vaasa Unit of Legal Studies. The Faculty’s mission is to train qualified, ethically responsible legal professionals for both the Finnish and international markets through high-quality international research and research-based teaching. The Faculty of Law offers undergraduate degrees in Finnish, Swedish and English as well as a bilingual degree in Finnish and Swedish. The Faculty has a teaching and research staff of around 120 people and 2,400 students pursuing a degree.

The Faculty of Law invites applications for

POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN intellectual property, finance, innovation and sustainability

for a fixed term of 3 years.

The appointee’s duties will include conducting research and providing teaching in areas connected to the research project´s themes or appointee´s areas of expertise as well as other activities at the Faculty.

The appointee will be a group member in a research project Shaping, fixing and making markets via IPR: regulating sustainable innovation ecosystems (SHARE). The SHARE project is a consortium between the University of Helsinki/Faculty of Law (Prof. Taina Pihlajarinne/project PI and Prof. Jukka Mähönen/sub-project PI) and the University of Lapland/Faculty of Law (Associate Prof. Rosa Maria Ballardini), funded by the Academy of Finland. The appointee will work under the supervision of Professor Taina Pihlajarinne and Professor Jukka Mähönen. However, close collaboration with the team from the University of Lapland will be pursued on a constant base. The main working language will be English.

The SHARE project explores the emerging need for embedding ‘strong’ environmental sustainability in the IPR- and finance- related regulation of the innovation ecosystem of sustainable technologies, like climate change mitigation technologies. We critically assess the role of IP and finance laws in creating incentives for developing and promoting diffusion of sustainable innovations via closely looking into three main stages of the CCMTs’ innovation ecosystem: 1) financing (market shaping), 2) regulating the process (market fixing), and 3) sharing, licensing and transferring (market making) the innovations. Overall, Share will develop a comprehensive academic study, comprising also of concrete recommendations, for how Europe could lead the transformation towards a more sustainable market economy.

The postdoctoral researcher will conduct research on the area of intellectual property, finance, innovation and sustainability. The appointee should have strong knowledge of European finance and / or intellectual property law and strong research interests on sustainability and law. The appointee shall have completed an applicable doctoral degree (law or social sciences) before the start of employment. The position requires the ability and motivation to conduct independent scientific research, and very good or excellent oral and written proficiency in English.

The salary will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system applied in Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The salary range will be €3,100–3,600 per month, depending on the merits and experience of the appointee. There will be a six-month trial period for the position.
