Viruses have an important impact on human health, and the benefits of development of antiviral therapies and virus mediated cancer therapy are considerable, in terms of economic, physical, social and mental well-being. The Horizon 2020 funded research project entitled Compact Cell-Imaging Device (CoCID) (2021-2024) aims to advance understanding the cellular origin of diseases and thereby allow development of specific treatment of disorders and virus-mediated treatment of cancer. 

The Department of Biological and Environmental Science is currently seeking to recruit a candidate to the position of 

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN VIRUS-CELL INTERACTIONS

The position starts on 2 January 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is initially for a period of 1 year. 

Qualifications we are looking for

We are looking for a skillful and motivated scientist to join in the in virus-nucleus interactions research group. The CoCID research project combines state-of-the-art fluorescent microscopy techniques, advanced image analysis, and 3D SXM imaging. The studies in Jyväskylä concentrate mostly on intranuclear interactions and dynamics of herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1). The project is integrated in the core research activities of the research group. During the project both the imaging facilities in University of Jyväskylä and facilities of our CoCID consortium and collaborators in Europe and USA will be used. 

The successful candidate should have a PhD degree in biophysics, biochemistry or life sciences with previous experience in cell imaging. The candidate should ideally have documented expertise in optical microscopy including image processing, detection, fluorescence and other mechanisms of contrast fluorescence labeling. Previous experience in confocal laser scanning microscopy, high resolution microscopy, in vivo tracking, photobleaching will be considered a plus. Ability to work as part of a team and strong motivation for science are fundamental as well as excellent writing and oral communication skills in English.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of postdoctoral researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. A good command of English is required and a proficiency to teach in English will be considered beneficial. A PhD degree is required.

The annual salary range will be approximately 38,000 EUR (gross income, including holiday bonus), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. A trial period of six months will be used when the position is first filled.
