The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science at the University of Jyväskylä is currently seeking to recruit a candidate for the position of

SENIOR LECTURER, MATHEMATICS

The position starts in March 1, 2021 at the latest or as soon as possible thereafter for a fixed-term of 5 years.

The University of Jyväskylä initiates a new education program in Information and Software Technology in the fall of 2021. We are recruiting a senior lecturer to be responsible for the practical design and implementation of mathematics courses related to the new program.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is responsible for teaching mathematics in the (Technology) Information and Software Engineering bachelor's program at the University of Jyväskylä. A core area of research of the department is analysis, which has long traditions. Many of the research groups focus on a variety of topics such as analysis on metric spaces, geometric measure theory, partial differential equations, calculus of variations, geometric analysis, as well as Mathematics of inverse problems. The statistical research is both theoretical and practical, developing new efficient estimation methods and skills to predict, suggest, and make conclusions from data more accurately.

We are looking for a person to complement the expertise in our department especially in the fields of discrete mathematics and technological applications.

 

Qualifications we are looking for

The tasks of a senior lecturer include active participation in teaching mathematics and conducting research. You will be responsible for the planning and implementation of mathematics education regarding the new (Technology) Information and Software Engineering program. The planning of the education program is done in cooperation with the Faculty of Information Technology.

Knowledge and experience in the fields of IT and software technology related to mathematics are considered beneficial. You are expected to develop the lecture materials, student supervision as well as teaching methods. Extensive experience in teaching and pedagogic competence is also considered beneficial.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of Senior Lecturer are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. A good command of English language and an ability to teach in Finnish are regarded as an advantage for the applicant.

The annual salary range will be approximately 39,000 – 53,000 EUR (gross income, including holiday bonus), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. A trial period of six months will be used.

  3. A maximum of five (5) main publications, numbered in accordance with the list of publications.
  4. A short (2-4 pages) description of
    • recommendations on how to improve the teaching of mathematics in the department, especially Information and Software technology
    • plans on what kind of research in the field of mathematics you are pursuing
  5. A short (1-2 pages) description of the applicant’s pedagogical training and teaching merits
  6. A short (2–3 pages) description of the applicant’s academic research, scientific merits and research leadership merits, including a clarification on received external funding and responsibilities in externally funded research projects
