The Department of Teacher Education is currently seeking to recruit staff to the position of

SENIOR LECTURER, Bilingual and Multilingual Pedagogy as of 1 April 2021 (or soon after that) until further notice

The faculty has a two-year English-medium Master’s Degree Programme in Educational Sciences, with specialization areas in educational leadership, early childhood education, special education, guidance and counselling, language education, and topical issues in psychology. Jointly with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the faculty has an English-medium Master’s Degree Programme in Development, Education and International Cooperation focusing on international development studies and issues of global education and training. The faculty participates in the multidisciplinary researcher network of the University of Jyväskylä’s School of Resource Wisdom (JYU.Wisdom), which seeks solutions for planetary wellbeing and sustainable use of resources.

Qualifications we are looking for

The position of senior lecturer at the department of Teacher Education aims to support the development of our graduates’ competences in bilingual and multilingual pedagogy as well as strengthen internationalisation and multiculturalism in the department. The focus of the position is on teaching and research on bilingual and multilingual pedagogy, including supervision of students’ theses in both Finnish- and English-medium programmes. The person to be selected is expected to conduct research in the field of the position, publish actively, apply for competitive supplementary research funding, and engage in research-based pedagogical development. Furthermore, the position includes participation in international cooperation with respect to both research and development activities, and engagement in societal interaction within the area of expertise.

A relevant doctoral degree, active research work and merits after completion of doctoral degree, and proficiency with respect to research methods in one’s field are requirements for the position. The selected candidate is expected to have expertise in foreign language pedagogy and multilingual teaching and learning. Further, the candidate is required to have a pedagogical qualification, strong evidence of teaching experience and of thesis supervision, and evidence of having developed and conducted research on education in the field. Special strengths that may be considered in the selection include relevant national and international development work and cooperation projects as well as expertise in cultural awareness. Further, strengths include experience of applying for research funding.

The duties and qualification requirements for the position are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. In this position, the main language of instruction is Finnish. Excellent Finnish and good English skills are thus required. The ability to teach in English is regarded an asset.

The annual salary range will be approximately 53000 –55000 EUR (gross income, including holiday bonus), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.

Six months trial period is applied to the filling of the position.
