The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is currently seeking to recruit a 

Senior Lecturer, Philosophy, from August 1st 2021 until further notice. 

The Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy is one of the leading units in social scientific and philosophical research in Finland. Our strengths are high quality, good international reputation, active participation in societal discussion, encouraging environment and student satisfaction. The focus areas of research at the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy are:

1. Traditions of Philosophical and Political Thought

2. Sustainable  Societies

3. Policies and Politics of Welfare and Care 

The Senior Lecturer’s position is allocated to the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy to the discipline of Philosophy. Its focus areas are phenomenology, history of philosophy, philosophy of human condition and social philosophy.  

The Senior Lecturer is expected to teach and supervise theses at the bachelor and masters levels of philosophy. In addition, the discipline of philosophy carries responsibilities in teaching the study module of ethics, and ethics and moral education in the high school teacher education. Philosophy is also a popular minor subject for the students of other Faculties. 

The Senior Lecturer is expected to be an active independent researcher who strengthens the research profile of the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy within the abovementioned areas of philosophy. In addition, activity in global research networks and potential for acquiring external funding are regarded as merits. 

The duties and qualification requirements for the position of the Senior Lecturer are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. In this position, the languages of instruction are Finnish and English. Good English skills are thus required, and the ability to teach in English is regarded an asset. 

The annual salary range will be approximately 38.800 – 64.200 EUR (gross income, including holiday bonus), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. 

Six months trial period is applied to the filling of the position.

Following documents must be included in English to the electronic recruiting system: 

  1. CV composed according to good scientific practice and considering, when possible, the template for researcher´s curriculum vitae of the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity (TENK);
  2. Short (2-4 pages) description of the applicant’s research activities, merits in scientific work, international activities, leading and supervising research, including acquisition of supplement funding and responsibilities in externally funded research projects, and experience in societal interaction.
  3. Short (2-3 pages) explanation of the applicant’s pedagogical training and teaching merits i.e. teaching portfolio;
  4. A numbered list of publications covering the applicant’s scientific and other publications according to the instructions of the Academy of Finland;
  5. A maximum of five publications, which must be numbered according to the list of publications.
