Load & Haul Division’s Turku plant with in Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions is a global technology and manufacturing center for underground loading & hauling equipment for mining industry. Today intelligent control system plays an essential and increasingly important role in safe and productive usage of mining equipment. R&D and Product Development organization is currently looking for a dynamic and innovative System Engineer for designing machine control Systems. The position is located in Turku, Finland.

Your mission

As a System Engineer, you will create high level functional specifications for implementing machine control systems. You will be part of Control System Architecture -team which defines the guidelines for control system architectures, specifies the machines control system features and coordinates the control system projects as a part of larger machine projects.

To succeed in this role you have experience of machine control systems. You are able and willing to learn how the Load and Haul machines operate in detail and in a larger high level scope. Controls System is the heart of the heavy mining machine and it has to work safely and reliably in all possible cases. The lifespan of Control System is counted in decades and the machines operate in distant underground mines in harsh conditions, so the control system quality and maintainability must be at a very high level.

Your main responsibilities include the following:

• Define the control system architectures and functional specifications co-operation with internal stakeholders of different technology areas. Continuous interaction with SW developers and SW test engineers is essential.

• Coordinate the control system sub entities and sub projects as a part of machines product development.

• Follow-up of standards, requirements and new technology in the area of underground loaders and trucks.

• Maintain wide understanding and knowledge of our embedded CAN- based control systems and supporting and sharing information for other internal stakeholders. This requires also learning and study of the current machine SW implementations, especially functions created by CoDeSys (IEC 61131-3).

• Learn and embrace characteristics of battery powered machines as well as traditional diesel engine usages.

Your character

You have a suitable degree in the field of engineering and a few year experience with a proven record of working with control system engineering tasks. You are a good team player that has good set of suitable team working skills. You are able to provide high quality machine functional specifications. Knowledge of working machine with embedded control systems are considered as major assets for this role. In this role, you will be seeing several technologies such as C/C++, Python, Qt and different versions of CoDeSys development environment. It is an advantage if you have knowledge of electric drive line, battery technology, hydraulics or low voltage electrics.

Your fluent communication skills both in Finnish and English is mandatory requirement. Proactive and systematic way of working and excellent skills in problem solving will be needed. You can work under pressure in a multicultural stakeholder environment and you have capability to meet the challenging targets driven by project deadlines in the field of Control System SW development.
