Are you an experienced Systems Engineer and happen to ask yourself how can your work help in this global environmental challenge that we all are facing? Join a team of more than 80 international professionals that are creating the most innovative predictive tools for the maritime industry. Help our Digital Development team in shaping a platform that focuses on detecting anomalies that indicate potential failures or reveal conditions involving the consumption of excess fuel. You will build great solutions that will ultimately help our customers in saving energy and resources while gaining safety.

Digital Product Development (DPD) develops digital products for Wärtsilä business units in Marine Power, Marine Systems and Energy. DPD uses a common technology stack to generate insight from operational data, to make for example predictive maintenance- or efficiency optimization products such as Wärtsilä Expert Insight. DPD is growing from around a 100 to 120 professionals. DPD consists of around 15 agile teams organized in 4 tribes, with clear focus areas, led by Chief Product Owners.

Within the Operational Support & WDCU (Wärtsilä Data Collection Unit) Tribe we are developing a secure and efficient data collection system that gathers operational data from various equipment, ranging from engines to exhaust treatment installations (scrubbers). Utilising the collected data we also develop and deliver the Operational Support service which includes tools to visualise how the equipment is performing and behaving, as well as collaborating (in real time) with our customers. These tools are available both locally on the WDCU as well as in the cloud.

Within our System Engineering team we work to standardise connectivity setups and WDCU installations. Our goal is to ensure that setups involving the WDCU and surrounding components are researched, tested, secure and well documented so that individual installations have a much smoother planning, design and commissioning phase. We also ensure that hardware lifecycles are tracked and that we have suitable successors found when requirements/standards change or end-of-life is reached.

As a Team Leader System Engineering you will help lead and drive the projects within the team as well as participating in the project tasks on a hands-on level. You will take ownership of the teams work and make real impact on how Wärtsilä delivers the WDCU, which in turn has direct impact on customer satisfaction. You are expected to be involved with stakeholders on a project level, but also to understand the material and to not be afraid to get your hands dirty with hardware, networks, technical documentation and technical support to your colleagues. The role is working alongside multi-disciplined technical experts who share a passion for technology and have a can-do mentality.

This is a permanent opportunity and will be located out of our office in Helsinki, Finland.

As a Team Leader System Engineering your work will focus on these responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of 3 other System Experts, as well as taking part in the tasks performed by the team
  • Help define and coordinate projects and tasks for the team, and support where needed to clarify requirements from the stakeholders
  • Be involved with the design of standard delivery setups for WDCU installations, for data collection and remote access
  • Be involved with the design and creation of technical documentation for WDCU including drawings and network diagrams
  • Provide technical sales support towards Agreement Sales and Connectivity Mobilization teams
  • Support WDCU product owner on hardware-, and network- and connectivity topics
  • Interface with engineering- and project management stakeholders in other business units including Power Supply, Exhaust Treatment and Gas Solutions
  • Work together with our senior cyber security manager to obtain cyber security approvals for WDCU and Data Bridge

To be successful in this role we expect you to have:

  • A Bachelor or Master's degree in Computer Science or at least proven established background in systems engineering
  • Background in leading projects and defining tasks for a team
  • Ability to effectively lead (small) teams and help to further develop team members based on your own skills and experiences
  • Sound knowledge with networking standards and topologies
  • Strong capability to create technical documentation and diagrams
  • Clear understanding and proven background with industrial communication protocols (Modbus, NMEA, OPC UA)
  • Skilled at working with Linux (Centos 7) and shell scripting
  • Experience working with container based technologies (Docker and/or Kubernetes) is a plus
  • Background of working within agile team environments, especially using Scrum and Kanban frameworks
  • Experience with Atlassian stack is a plus
