The Faculty of Medicine promotes scientific research of a high standard and is responsible for providing research-based undergraduate and postgraduate education in medicine, dentistry, psychology and logopedics, as well as for the English-language Master’s Programme in Translational Medicine. In addition to its teaching and research activities, the Faculty serves as a significant expert organisation in the healthcare sector and contributes to the discourse on ethics in the field. In terms of research, the Faculty aims for a place among the best medical faculties in the world, while consolidating and strengthening its status as a top-level institution of medical education.

Together with HUS Helsinki University Hospital and the Helsinki Institute of Life Sciences (HiLIFE), the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, constitutes the Academic Medical Center Helsinki (AMCH). The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of a part-time (35 %)

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR

The field of the position is Radiology.

The position may be filled as assistant professor, associate professor or professor, depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage.

The professorship in Radiology is connected to the position of chief physician at HUS Helsinki University Hospital. The professorship and the position of chief physician at Helsinki University Hospital are filled through a simultaneous open application process. A separate application must be submitted for the position of chief physician at HUS Helsinki University Hospital in accordance with the hospital district’s instructions.

Assistant / associate professor
An appointee to the position of assistant professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means.
When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience.

Professor
An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.
When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and
pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills.
To ensure that the applicant’s ability to supervise theses and dissertations meets the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine, he or she must have completed the supervision of at least one doctoral dissertation.

Together with the other professors in the field, the appointee will be responsible for research, as well as undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education in medicine and dentistry, and is responsible for the specialist training in radiology. The appointee also participates in lecture-based teaching and practical small-group teaching.
The professor’s duties also include carrying out and supervising scientific research, following developments in research and participating in societal interaction as well as national and international cooperation in the field. In addition, the professor’s duties include other tasks assigned to the unit.

Practical experience can be demonstrated with a specialist degree or license in Radiology.

The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant professor) and levels 8-10 (professor) of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.

Should the proposals of the appointment committees of the Faculty of Medicine and HUS differ from each other, HUS may continue the appointment procedure for the position of chief physician at HUS. In this case The Faculty of Medicine will decide whether to continue the appointment process without HUS or terminate the appointment process for the professorship.

If the appointee to the professorship resigns from the position of chief physician at HUS, his or her employment contract with the University of Helsinki will also be terminated. The appointment to the position of chief physician is valid indefinitely, not exceeding the duration of employment in the professorship at the University of Helsinki.
