The Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences invites applications for 10 doctoral researcher positions. 

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are looking for highly qualified and motivated doctoral researchers to join the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University. Our Faculty is made up of four units: Computing Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Communication Sciences and Languages. Our research combines a diverse spectrum of communication and interaction, be it between humans, between humans and machines, or between machines. Our research themes include, for example, robotics, game research, artificial intelligence, electronics and embedded systems, smart grids and power electronics, communication, journalism, media and culture, theatre and drama, and literature and linguistics. 

The position of doctoral researcher offers you the opportunity to concentrate full time on your doctoral studies while receiving high-quality supervision along with the freedom and encouragement to develop your ideas in a supportive, inspirational and multidisciplinary research environment. 

Doctoral researchers are hired on a fixed-term basis for from 2 years up to 4 years. The exact length of the contract will depend on the current stage of your studies and your expected graduation date. 

Besides conducting research for your dissertation, you will be expected to teach or perform other duties related to your studies. These duties may not exceed 5% of your overall working hours.  

The successful candidates will pursue a doctoral degree in one of the doctoral programmes of the Faculty.  

The successful candidates will be able to explore topics relating to any of the research fields of our Faculty. Depending on your research topic, you can apply to one of the four theme areas available in our doctoral programmes: 

1. Humans and Technologies

The Doctoral Programme of Humans and Technologies explores the relationships between people, information and technology, covering research of Human-Technology Interaction, Interactive technology, Information studies, Information retrieval, as well as Games and Gamification. The Doctoral Programme prepares students for challenging research, R&D and specialist careers relating to interaction between people, society and technology. The field has a strong interdisciplinary dimension and it employs a broad range of research methodologies and approaches. Research in the program draws from knowledge and expertise in areas ranging from computer science and information studies to human sciences, such as psychology and sociology.

Examples for areas of research include: 

  • Human-Technology Interaction
    • Novel forms of human-technology interaction, including multimodal and multisensory interaction 
    • Interaction and applications on new technology platforms such as Virtual Reality, social robots and autonomous vehicles 
    • Human-Centered aspects to computing systems and Artificial Intelligence 
    • User experience and emotions in information technology systems 
    • Societal impact, accessibility and ethics of digital technology 
  • Information Studies 
    • Information practices and information interaction

2. Information, Systems, Computing and Electrical Engineering

Electrical engineering and Information processing sciences underlie the core activities in organisations and the broader society. Operations and events generate tremendous amounts of data that needs to be processed, analysed and transmitted wherever it is needed. Computing, signal processing and telecommunications are the scientific fields that deal with these tasks. Data analysis and information processing are based on mathematics and statistics. The required hardware and power are developed in the fields of electronics and computer and electrical engineering. The methods and applications of power generation and transmission, electronics and information technology pervade all human activity and are central in answering the global and local challenges that we are facing. 

Possible areas of research include:

3. Language Studies

The Doctoral Programme in Language Studies is a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary programme that combines research on languages, literature, and culture, as well as the study of translation and interpreting, with different theoretical frameworks. The programme offers doctoral degrees in the following fields: English language and literature, Finnish language, German language and culture, Russian language and culture, Scandinavian languages, and translation studies. 

 Possible areas of research include: 

  • sociolinguistics
  • spatial literary and cultural studies as well as environmental humanities 
  • sociology of translation 
  • linguistic challenges of the globalised, increasingly multilingual and multicultural society
  • mobility and cross-cultural relations in literature and other art forms  
  • translation and interpreting as professional operations; specialised translation
  • historical perspectives on language, literature and translation 
  • corpus linguistics and corpus-based translation studies

4. Media, Communication and Performing Arts

The Doctoral Programme in Media, Communication and Performing Arts educates experts and researchers in communication, game studies, journalism, media studies, sound studies, visual culture and performing arts. These fields are connected through the research of reality and the construction of performances of said reality, the public nature of these professions and the concrete dimension of skills, social aspects and an understanding of communications from the perspective of simultaneity of meaning and materiality: as images, words, sounds, interaction, embodiment, game and play, performances and stories.

Possible areas of research include:  

  • Research on journalistic work, journalism as a profession, the role of journalism in society, visual journalism, public participation, digitalization.
  • Media, technology and society, media theory, media and affects, visual culture, sound studies 
  • Critical and societal studies of game cultures and game production, methods for analyzing individual games and forms of play, research of players and player experiences
  • Small group and interpersonal communication, political communication, communication and working life, health communication 
  • Academic and artistic research on theatre, drama and the performing arts

REQUIREMENTS

We expect candidates to hold an applicable master’s degree and to have been admitted, or be eligible to be admitted, to one of the doctoral programmes administered by the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University. 

When considering candidates, we will focus on the following:

  • ambition, scientific quality and innovativeness of the research plan
  • feasibility of the proposed research
  • merits of the applicant  
  • research environment and/or support of the research group
  • demonstrated (during studies towards the master’s degree or otherwise) competence and motivation to successfully complete a doctoral degree

WE OFFER 

The positions will be filled for a fixed-term period of from two years up to four years starting as soon as possible but no later than 1 August 2021.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a doctoral researcher is placed on level 2-4 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for a doctoral researcher is approx. 2400€/month. A higher salary may be agreed upon based on the successful candidate’s experience and the progress of his or her doctoral studies. 

A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

Informaatioteknologian ja viestinnän tiedekunnassa on haettavana 10 väitöskirjatutkijan tehtävää. 

Tehtävänkuvaus

Etsimme lahjakkaita ja motivoituneita väitöskirjatutkijoita tiedekuntaamme määräaikaisiin työsuhteisiin. Tiedekuntamme koostuu Tietotekniikan, Sähkötekniikan, Viestintätieteiden ja Kielten yksiköistä. Tutkimuksessa yhdistyvät ihmisten välisen, koneiden välisen sekä ihmisten ja koneiden välisen vuorovaikutuksen monipuolinen kirjo. Esimerkkejä tiedekuntamme tutkimuksesta ovat mm. robotiikka, pelitutkimus, tekoäly, älykkäät sähköenergiajärjestelmät ja tehoelektroniikka, elektroniikka ja sulautetut järjestelmät, langaton tietoliikenne ja tietoliikenneverkot, viestintä, journalistiikka, mediakulttuuri, teatteri ja draama sekä kielet ja kirjallisuus. 

Väitöskirjatutkijan tehtävä tarjoaa mahdollisuuden keskittyä kokopäiväisesti jatko-opintoihisi samalla, kun saat korkealaatuista ohjausta sekä vapauden ja kannustuksen kehittää ideoitasi inspiroivassa ja monialaisessa tutkimusympäristössä.

Väitöskirjatutkijan tehtävät täytetään määräaikaisesti 2-4 vuodeksi. Sopimuksen kesto määräytyy opintojen nykyisen vaiheen ja arvioidun valmistumispäivän mukaan.

Väitöskirjatyön rinnalla väitöskirjatutkijan tulee opettaa tai suorittaa muita opintoihisi liittyviä tehtäviä. Näiden tehtävien määrä ei saa ylittää 5:tä prosenttia työajastasi. Väitöskirjatutkijat suorittavat tohtorintutkinnon jossakin tiedekuntamme tohtoriohjelmista. 

Väitöskirjatutkijat voivat tutkia aiheita, jotka liittyvät mihin tahansa tiedekuntamme tutkimusalaan. Tutkimusaiheesi mukaan voit hakea johonkin tohtoriohjelmiemme neljästä teema-alueesta:

1. Ihmiset ja teknologiat -tohtoriohjelma 

Ihmiset ja Teknologiat -tohtoriohjelma käsittelee ihmisten, tiedon ja teknologian suhteita. Ohjelma pitää sisällään tutkimusta, joka käsittelee ihmisen ja teknologian vuorovaikutusta, vuorovaikutteista teknologiaa, informaatiotutkimusta, informaation hakua, sekä pelejä ja pelillisyyttä. Tohtoriohjelma valmistaa opiskelijoita vaativiin tutkimus- tuotekehitys- ja asiantuntijatehtäviin, jotka liittyvät ihmisten, yhteiskunnan ja teknologian vuorovaikutukseen. Ohjelmalla on vahva poikkitieteellinen dimensio ja se hyödyntää laajasti erilaisia tutkimusmenetelmiä ja lähestymistapoja. Ohjelmassa tehtävä tutkimus pohjautuu mm. tietojenkäsittelytieteeseen, tietotekniikkaan, informaatiotutkimukseen, sekä ihmistieteisiin kuten psykologiaan ja sosiologiaan.

2. Informaatio, järjestelmät, tieto- ja sähkötekniikka

Nämä tohtoriohjelmat kattavat laajan kirjon yhteen liittyviä tieteen ja teknologian aloja. Sähkö- ja informaatioteknologiat ovat keskeisiä lähes kaikkien organisaatioiden toiminnalle. Digitalisoituvassa yhteiskunnassa kaikesta toiminnasta syntyy dataa, jonka käsittely, analysointi, siirto ja tallentaminen oikeassa paikassa ja oikeaan aikaan on haasteellista. Tietojenkäsittelyä, signaalinkäsittelyä sekä radio- ja tietoliikenneverkkoja kehittämällä voimme vastata näihin haasteisiin. Näiden tieteenalojen olemassaolo ja kehitys perustuu osaksi matematiikan ja tilastotieteen jatkuvaan tutkimukseen. Tietokonetekniikan ja elektroniikan tutkimus liittyy samaan kokonaisuuteen tärkeänä laskennan ja laitteistokehityksen mahdollistajana. Laitteiden toiminta taas perustuu siihen, että sähköä tuotetaan ja siirretään jatkuvasti ja luotettavasti. Sähkö- ja tietotekniikan alat siis kattavat laajan osan inhimillisestä toiminnasta. Alojen jatkuva kehitys mahdollistaa ihmiskunnan keskeisiin haasteisiin vastaamisen nyt ja tulevaisuudessa.

3. Kielten tohtoriohjelma

Kielten tohtoriohjelma on perinteisiä tieteenalarajoja ylittävä monialainen ja poikkitieteinen jatkokoulutusohjelma, joka yhdistää kielten, kielialueiden kirjallisuuden ja kulttuurin sekä kääntämisen ja tulkkauksen tutkimuksen erilaisissa teoreettisissa viitekehyksissä. Jatkotutkinnon voi suorittaa seuraavilta aloilta: englantilainen kieli ja kirjallisuus, pohjoismaiset kielet, käännöstiede, saksan kieli ja kulttuuri, suomen kieli ja venäjän kieli ja kulttuuri.

4. Media- ja viestintätutkimuksen ja esittävien taiteiden tohtoriohjelma

Media- ja viestintätutkimuksen ja esittävien taiteiden tohtoriohjelmassa koulutetaan journalismin, mediatutkimuksen, pelitutkimuksen, viestinnän, visuaalisen kulttuurin ja äänentutkimuksen sekä esittävien taiteiden asiantuntijoita ja tutkijoita. Näitä aloja yhdistää kiinnostus maailman samanaikaiseen merkitysvälitteisyyteen ja materiaalisuuteen, esitysten rakentaminen sosiaalisesta todellisuudesta, ammattien julkinen luonne ja niihin liittyvä taitoulottuvuus, yhteiskunnallisuus sekä viestinnän lähestyminen kuvien, sanojen, äänten, vuorovaikutuksen, kehollisuuden, pelin, leikin ja tarinoiden kautta.

Hakijalta edellytetään

Valittavalla hakijalla tulee olla soveltuva maisterin tutkinto sekä opinto-oikeus johonkin Informaatioteknologian ja viestinnän tiedekunnan tohtoriohjelmista.

Hakemuksia käsiteltäessä arvioimme seuraavia tekijöitä:

  • tutkimussuunnitelman kunnianhimo, tieteellinen laatu ja innovatiivisuus
  • ehdotetun tutkimuksen toteutettavuus
  • hakijan ansiot
  • tutkimusympäristö ja / tai tutkimusryhmän tuki
  • hakijan (maisteriksi tai muulla tavalla suoritettavien opintojen aikana) pätevyyttä ja motivaatiota suorittaa tohtorin tutkinto onnistuneesti

Jos valittavalla hakijalla ei ole vielä opinto-oikeutta tiedekunnan tohtoriohjelmaan, opinto-oikeus tulee hakea erikseen. Hakuaika informaation ja järjestelmien tohtoriohjelmaan, kielten tohtoriohjelmaan sekä media- ja viestintätutkimuksen ja esittävien taiteiden tohtoriohjelmaan on 1.4. – 30.4. sekä ihmiset ja teknologiat -tohtoriohjelmaan on 1.4. - 12.5. TARJOAMME

Väitöskirjatutkijan tehtävät täytetään määräaikaisesti 2-4 vuodeksi. Työsuhde voi alkaa niin pian kuin mahdollista, mutta viimeistään 1.8.2021 alkaen.

Kaikissa uusissa tehtävissämme on 6 kuukauden koeaika.

Tehtävän palkkaus määräytyy yliopistojen opetus- ja tutkimushenkilöstön palkkausjärjestelmän mukaisesti. Väitöskirjatutkijan tehtävä sijoittuu vaativuustasoille 2-4. Lisäksi maksetaan henkilökohtaiseen työstä suoriutumiseen perustuvaa palkanosaa.  Tyypillinen aloituspalkka väitöskirjatutkijan tehtävässä on n. 2400 €/kk. Tarkempi palkkaus määräytyy väitöskirjatyön vaiheen ja henkilökohtaisen suoriutumisen perusteella.

  • Tutkimussuunnitelma, max. 6 sivua, sisältäen:
    • Tiivistelmän/johdannon, tutkimustaustan, tavoitteet ja tutkimuskysymykset sekä odotettavissa olevat tulokset ja niiden uutuusarvo tutkimukselle – katsothan tohtoriohjelmasi sivuilta mahdolliset tarkemmat ohjeet tutkimussuunnitelmalle
    • Aikataulun (esim. taulukko sisältäen tohtoriopintojesi aloitusajankohdan ja odotetun valmistumisajankohdan) ja ajanjakson, jolle tarvitset rahoitusta sekä tiedot aiemmin saaduista rahoituksista ja niiden ajankohdista
    • Taulukon julkaisuista (tai luvuista/osatutkimuksista, jos kyseessä monografia), jossa on seuraavat kolumnit ja rivit kuvastavat yhtä tutkimusta/artikkelia/lukua: 
      • alustava otsikko (aihe)
      • tutkimuskysymykset
      • tutkimusmenetelmät ja kerättävä aineisto 
      • tavoitellut julkaisukanavat 
      • arvioitu valmistumisajankohta
  • Listaus tutkintoon sisällytettävistä opintojaksoista sekä alustava opintosuunnitelma suoritettavista opinnoista
  • Allekirjoitettu ohjaajan (tai ohjaajien) lausunto, josta käy ilmi, puoltaako ohjaaja hakijan työsuunnitelmaa
  • Kopiot maisterin ja kandidaatin tutkintojen tutkintotodistuksista ja opintosuoritusotteesta sekä niiden englanninkielisistä käännöksistä  liitteineen (suomenkieliset todistukset hyväksytään)
