The University of Helsinki (https://www.helsinki.fi/en) is an international scientific community of 40,000 students and researchers. It is one of the leading multidisciplinary research universities in Europe and ranks among the top 100 international universities in the world.

The Department of Physics (https://www2.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-science/faculty/physics) offers the most varied university programme in the physical sciences in Finland. The department is large and multidisciplinary and employs about 200 people, of which 2 are academy professors (one of whom starting 1.9.2021), 17 are professors and 4 are associate and assistant professors. The research at the department and the research-based teaching follow a high international standard, are nationally significant, and promote the mental and economic wellbeing in society.

The Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki invites applications for a

A DOCTORAL STUDENT position in the in the SWATNET Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Space Weather Awareness Training Network (SWATNet) is a Marie - Sklodowska - Curie action Innovative Training Network (ITN) project. The project aims at breakthroughs in our physical understanding of the key agents of Space Weather. SWATNET educates 12 PhD students in the field of heliophysics with training led by experienced supervisors in a challenging, inherently international and interdisciplinary research environment. The consortium consists of nine Parties from eight European countries, as well as several recognized companies in the field. All students will be also introduced to the basics of solar observations at our partner observatory and conduct 1-3 months of industrial training. Please see https://swatnet.eu/ for further information on the project.

The position announced here is in SWATNet Project 6, This project aims to investigate how CMEs evolve in the corona and quantify how this evolution depends on the magnetic structure of the CME, the instability responsible for the CME eruption and the properties of the source active regions. The project will combine state-of-the-art time-dependent magnetofrictional modelling and use extensive set of remote-sensing coronal observations.

The selected student will pursue a PhD double degree awarded by University of Helsinki and Finland, and KU Leuven, Belgium https://www.kuleuven.be/english/. There is a 9 -months of compulsory period in KU Leuven (Secondment).

ELIGIBILITY/REQUIREMENTS

You need to be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of your research career. You shall not have lived for more than 12 months in the last 3 years in Finland (Compulsory national service and short-time vacations do not count).

Your previous degree must be relevant to the planned research topic and discipline. A degree is regarded as relevant if it includes sufficient studies in a discipline which, given the topic of the proposed doctoral dissertation, can be regarded as a suitable basis for doctoral studies. Education in space physics, space weather, plasma physics or similar field is required. You must have completed a Finnish second-cycle (master’s) degree or a foreign degree that makes you eligible for doctoral education in the country where the degree was completed. We require experience with Python and value experience in the analysis and visualization of three-dimensional datasets, experience with HPC, knowledge of solar observations.
