We are now seeking two assistant professors, associate professors or full professors of Architecture (Sustainable renovation, 1 position) and Civil Engineering (Structural engineering and sustainable renovation, 1 position).

These positions are placed in the Faculty of Built Environment where we work towards creating a sustainable built environment. We conduct high-quality scientific and applied research in the fields of architecture and civil engineering and provide higher education based on this research. Our unique research environment promotes collaboration and innovations and opens opportunities to pursue new avenues of multidisciplinary research and education.   

The research interests of our faculty and staff cover a wide variety of topics relating to the built environment. We carry out research in close collaboration with our external stakeholders. Our research not only meets international standards of excellence but also delivers practical benefits, thereby making a significant positive impact on the broader society. The utilisation and development of the built environment has a central role in building economically, ecologically and socially sustainable societies.    

At the Faculty of Built Environment, research activities are carried out by the School of Architecture, the Civil Engineering Unit and their research groups. We are now looking to fill two tenure track positions in renovation, one in each unit. Strengthening our faculty with these two tenure track positions is an investment in research and education relating to the sustainable built environment and renovation.  

Job description   

Tenure Track position in Sustainable renovation (Architecture)  

We are looking for a scholar with a degree in architecture or other relevant field to lead research and teaching activities in this field. We expect you to have the ability to create and lead a research group and to teach students from Finnish and multicultural backgrounds on all levels from bachelor to doctoral and in the context of continuing education.   

You are a future-oriented researcher with a track record of acquiring competitive research funding and publishing original research in high-quality international peer-reviewed journals. You are capable of combining theoretical competence and research to solve practical design problems, and you are comfortable with engaging with practitioners and other external stakeholders in the field.   

We expect you to have a sufficient understanding about the technical, ecological and socio-cultural aspects of building life cycle extension in Nordic conditions. Your field of research could explore sustainable transformation of existing building stocks from one or more of the following perspectives: adaptive reuse of facilities, climate change adaptation, spatial and material stocks and flows, dynamics and modelling, life cycle assessment, circular economy and urban mining, policy and regulation. The position will have a focus on modern (post-WWII) building stocks.   

Tenure track position in structural engineering and sustainable renovation (Civil Engineering)  

We are looking for a scholar with a degree in Civil Engineering or other relevant field to become a future leader of research and education activities in the area of structural engineering and sustainable renovation. We expect you to have an ability to create and lead a research group and teach students from Finnish and multicultural backgrounds on all levels from bachelor to doctoral and in the context of continuing education.   

You are a future-oriented researcher with a track record of acquiring competitive research funding and publishing original research in high-quality international peer-reviewed journals. You are capable of combining theoretical competence and research to solve practical design problems, and you are comfortable with engaging with practitioners and other external stakeholders in the field.   

You have good knowledge of the structures of buildings especially in Finnish and Nordic context, are familiar with typical damage mechanisms of materials and have experience with suitable repair and service-life extension techniques. You also have good understanding of building physics, as well as the impact of various repair options on the physical functionality and performance of structures. Your field of research could explore the challenges of structural engineering of existing building stock from one or more of the following perspectives: climate change adaptation, degradation mechanisms, resilience of structures, service life engineering, condition assessments, and repair of structures.  

 Requirements   

 Assistant Professor

  • applicable doctoral degree;   

  • ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence;     

  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.   

Associate Professor   

 We require:   

  • applicable doctoral degree;  

  • track record of independent scholarly activity;   

  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position;    

  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding;   

  • track record of international scholarly activity.     

Professor   

We require:   

  • applicable doctoral degree;   

  • high-level scholarly expertise;   

  • experience of leading scientific research;   

  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction;    

  • track record of winning external research funding;     

  • track record of international scholarly activity.  

We will expect your profile to align with the strategy of Tampere University and with the profile of the Faculty of Built Environment. Ideally, for more senior level appointments, you will have experience of leading or making a major contribution to a research group. An existing track record of industry collaboration will be considered an advantage.    

We offer   

Initial appointment as an assistant professor and associate professor will be for five years. Subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured faculty member at the end of the first five-year period. You will be well supported throughout the five-year period to ease your transition to a tenured position. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The starting salary range will be from €4,000 to €4,600/month for an assistant professor, from €4,600 to €5,300/month for an associate professor, and from €5,500 to €6,300/month for a professor. A higher salary may be agreed upon based on the successful candidate’s experience and/or performance.

Rakennetun ympäristön tiedekunnassa teemme korkeatasoista arkkitehtuurin ja rakennustekniikan alojen tieteellistä ja soveltavaa tutkimusta sekä annamme näihin tutkimusaloihin liittyvää ylintä opetusta.
