Museology is a study module offered by the Department of Cultures at the University of Helsinki Faculty of Arts and taught in the Master’s Programme in Cultural Heritage.

The Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position of
UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN MUSEOLOGY

to begin on 1 August 2021. There is a six-month trial period for the position.

The duties of the university lecturer include providing teaching in accordance with the curriculum, conducting research in the field, and attending to other duties related to the discipline and degree programme.

The appointee must hold an applicable doctoral degree and be able to provide high-quality teaching based on research.

When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention will be paid to both scholarly qualifications and teaching experience: publications and experience in research projects as well as pedagogical skills and the ability to produce learning materials. The appointee is also expected to have good teamwork and interaction skills.

Museology is an advanced study module that serves the University as a whole. The university lecturer in museology will cooperate closely with both the cultural heritage sector and disciplines related to the field. The aim of museology is to support and further develop professionalism in the museum sector and to develop a critical understanding of cultural heritage processes and practices.

The university lecturer in museology will have primary responsibility for teaching in museology as well as its provision and development as part of the Master’s Programme in Cultural Heritage. Applicants must have solid expertise and teaching experience in various areas of museology. As a scholar, the appointee is expected to develop the academic profile of museology, establish research groups and apply for external research funding. The appointee will collaborate with the Helsinki University Museum and contribute to its development. The focus in teaching will be on project-based courses organised in cooperation with the cultural heritage sector. Consequently, knowledge of the Finnish museum sector will be considered an asset.

To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good Finnish and English skills. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application.
The salary will be based on levels 5–7 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The appointee’s gross salary will depend on their qualifications and experience.
