Business Designer

Who we are:

Wärtsilä Voyage radically transforms how vessels perform their voyage by leveraging the latest digital technologies, to deliver a step-change in safety, efficiency, reliability, and emissions.

We are developing a unique integrated infrastructure that combines the bridge systems, cloud data management, data services, decision support tools, and access to real-time information, resulting in a smarter Voyage. Our customized, eco-conscious approach ensures that not only do our customers all around the globe reap the full benefits of the technology revolution, they actively contribute towards achieving a sustainable shipping future. With the broadest Smart Marine portfolio in the market, Wärtsilä Voyage is well positioned to lead the industry towards becoming digitally connected across the entire value chain – let us take you on a journey!

We are now looking for a Business Designer - who will be reporting into our Lead Service Design.

Purpose of the role:

What if we’d have a person in our team who’d speak fluent business model creation and have good skills in design thinking? We’d be unbeatable in our quest to create new product and service concepts for our merchant and cruise customers!

Our Evidence Based Development team is focusing on designing new products and services, which are based on real-life onboard and onshore experiences, and tested and evaluated together with customers before starting the fully committed R&D work. Our cross-competence team uses design thinking methods to create and validate hypotheses that will lead us to feasible service and product concepts.

To strengthen our work, we are now looking to add a seasoned Business Designer to bring viability expertise to our team of experts. You’ll be leading the process of prototyping new business models and business cases and refining those into a shape that both excites our customers as well as internal stakeholders. We expect that this will include a fair amount of market research, competitor analysis and number crunching, but also facilitation of (virtual) collaboration and working on the field. Since this is a new role in our team, we expect it to develop and grow with you.

You’ll be working on projects that are forward-looking and will shape the marine industry: One day, you might work on concepts around autonomous shipping and the next deep dive into paperless vessels. Luckily, you’ll be part of a great team of ex-captains, service & UX designers and technical architects to produce and prototype preliminary, yet informed, guesses and hypotheses on upcoming products or services.

Key responsibilities:

  • Designing and validating business models, value propositions, value chains and profit mechanisms.

  • Creating and validating business cases. Will require establishing a close working relationship with various internal stakeholders.

  • Landscape analysis by conducting market and competitor research.

  • Prototyping and testing. Working in iterative style with internal stakeholders and customers to polish the viability of our concepts.

  • Getting stuff done. We work as a team and sometimes this means taking care of project management duties, stakeholder communications or testing our latest VR-prototypes.

 Key requirements:

  • Experienced in business model design, business case creation with a degree in business and 2-3 years of experience as Business Designer or similar role.

  • Comfortable working in cross-competence teams and communicating business concepts to a variety of audiences.

  • Analytical mindset mixed with design thinking -skills.

  • Working in a virtual setting whether it is about facilitation of workshop, conducting interviews or running a Teams -call.

  • Willingness to travel for field work. (we’ll get back there!)

  • Fluent in Excel as well as working proficiency in English.

  • Ability to build & develop trustful professional relationships with ease across your business stakeholders including customers and peers.

  • Bring a creative thinking approach when it comes to complex problem-solving situations.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Curious and creative mind!

If the above profile sounds like you and joining a business where you can work with talented, global teams, exciting products, and where your work can make a huge impact both internally and externally, then we would love to hear from you!
