University of Oulu, with approximately 15 000 students and 3 000 employees, is an international, multidisciplinary research university. The strengths of the University include broad, multidisciplinary research interests, a modern research and study environment, and wide cooperation with international research and educational institutes (http://www.oulu.fi/university/)

Department of Ecology and Genetics has an opening for a 1-year Postdoctoral Researcher position in the project Stream biodiversity change: disentangling the effects of multiple anthropogenic drivers on riverine ecosystems”. The project is funded by the Academy of Finland and the start date should be August, 2021.

The project focuses on understanding the interactive and independent effects of climate change and land-use disturbance on stream biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. The project uses several freshwater organism groups and is strongly experimental, including both mesocosm and field experiments, complemented with broad-scale correlative surveys.

We are looking for an individual keen to work both in the laboratory and in the field. We expect a firm background in freshwater community ecology, good knowledge on numerical ecology and statistical modeling, and fluent oral and written English skills. Previous experience on stream ecosystems is considered beneficial, as is also any experience with microbial ecology and molecular techniques. The candidate should have PhD in a relevant field (ecology, limnology) and demonstrable qualifications in research (publications in international journals). In addition to conducting research in his/her own project, the post doc is expected to contribute to thesis supervision and teaching at all levels. The post doc will work in an international group of researchers at different career stages, all focusing on different aspects of community ecology of stream and groundwater-dependent ecosystems (https://streamecology.wordpress.com/).

The salary is based on the levels 5-6 of the demand level chart for university–level teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid. The salary will thus be roughly 3400-3700 € per month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.

Applications, with all relevant enclosures, must be submitted using the electronic application form by April 27th, 2021. Applications submitted by e-mail will not be considered.

The application should include:

  • a brief outline (1-2 pages) of research interests
  • a CV with the names and contact details of 2-3 referees
  • copies of relevant official degree documents
