The University of Turku is a world-class multidisciplinary research university which offers interesting challenges and a unique vantage point to national and international research and education.

University of Turku, Department of Computing has an open position for a doctoral candidate or project researcher on scientific data analysis. The preferred starting date is in June, 2021 but can be negotiated.The fixed-term position ends on 28.2.2025.

Project The position is intended for full-time research, including moderate contributions to university teaching and other supporting tasks. The project will focus on the development of statistical machine learning and algorithmic data analysis techniques for studying complex natural and social systems in close collaboration with key partners in Finland and abroad. Specific application areas include microbial ecology, metagenomics, and computational humanities. The thesis of a doctoral candidate will be done in University of Turku under supervision of associate professor Leo Lahti (Department of Computing).

Qualifications We are looking for outstanding candidates with good collaboration skills and analytical capabilities. An ideal candidate has a solid methodological background (mathematics / physics / statistics / ecology / informatics / computer science, or similar) and ability to work in multidisciplinary environment. Familiarity with statistical programming, Unix/Linux, and bioinformatics can be considered as an advantage. Fluent communication skills in English are essential. The doctoral candidate should hold a MSc degree with excellent grades in a relevant field. A new doctoral candidate must pass the standard enrollment process.

The qualification requirements of the position are stated in the University of Turku Rules of Procedure: https://www.utu.fi/en/university/organisation A person selected for the post of doctoral candidate/project researcher is required to have a higher university degree. The degree must be completed by the end of the application period. A doctoral candidate must also have an accepted research plan. In addition, when acquiring his or her degree or otherwise, he or she is required to have demonstrated the ability and motivation to undertake postgraduate studies and the capacity to complete a doctoral degree in accordance with the research plan.


The salary for a doctoral candidate/project researcher is based on levels 2-4 of the demands level chart for teaching and research staff in the salary system applied at Finnish universities, according to which the base salary for the position is 2078,27–2591,28  euro per month. In addition, a performance-based salary component of min 6% and max 50 % will be paid.

Strong candidates who will graduate soon or are willing to make MSc thesis as part of the project are also encouraged to apply. In such case, the position starts as a research assistant.
The salary for a research assistant is based on level 1 according to which the base salary is 1889,69 euro per month. In addition, a performance-based salary component of min 6% and max 50 % will be paid.

A six (6) month trial period applies to the position.
